I am thinking about purchasing an unlocked phone to use in the UK and Japan. Do I have to get international service from a carrier like T-mobile in the US to use this phone overseas? even though I am planning to purchase a SIM card at the destination?? If not, when I purchase a SIM card, do I get a local phone number?? Thank you for your help.
As far as I know, as long as you buy a quadband phone, you can use whatever simcard you buy from UK or Japan howeve for 3Gs and stuff you might not be able to connect to japan since they are using a diff frequency, the work around for that is use the international service option. There might be other ways to do it, but this is how i will do it if I were you : )

    Hi there

What sort of phone do you have - it's possible that it might work in the UK. However Japan is a different story and it's highly likely that your US phone won't work there - even with a Japanese SIM.

I have a 'Deluxe' phone from Mobal that I use in Japan and also Europe. It's great because it means that I only have one number (a UK one) no matter where I am in the world.

This is the page where I bought my phone International Cell Phone and World Phones for Travel.

    I hope that helps!
