if their contract says it can add, then so be it.. although that is very unlikely.. but still, when you put the order for the regular plan and stipulated an option for the additional line.. then yes..

The Original Poster never returned after posting the message. Several of the replies confused the GoPhone plan with the phone itself. One cannot add a GoPhone plan to a postpaid account. One can get the GoPhone plan changed to a postpaid plan and keep the same number if the GoPhone number is from the same market as the postpaid lines. One can use any compatible phone on a postpaid account. In a FamilyTalk voice plan, each line has its individual contract. FamilyTalk plans share minutes and not contracts. The lines opened at the same time might not even have the same upgrade eligibility date. The primary line might be eligible for an upgrade before secondary lines because more is spent on that line. The voice plan charge for the primary line is considered spent by that line in addition to any qualifying features. A secondary line only pays $9.99 for its voice plan plus eligible features.

I know this is an old post, but for some who may have the same question....

Yes, you can add a go phone to your family plan. You need to add a line and get a sim card, then simply put the new sim card in the go phone and you're good to go.

In regards to the contract... When I added my daughter to my family plan, MY contract did NOT change for my phone, or for my other daughter's phone- my younger daughter whom I added had a 2 year contract that began the day we activated her sim. So while my older daughter and I were eligible to upgrade our phones if we wanted (when our contracts were up, since they were up sooner), my younger daughter had to wait the 2 years for her phone in order to upgrade. But our original 2 phones did not have to wait until the newer phone's contract was 2 years old.

So, to answer the question about the contract, it's both a yes and a no. Yes you will be locked into a contract on the new addition to your family plan, but not on the other, original phones, on the family plan.

At least that's how it worked for us. I added my younger daughter in the summer of 2008, we originally began our family plan with 2 lines in the spring of 2007. The 2 original phones were no longer under contract and were eligible for upgrades in the spring of 2009, but the newer line had a contract until this past summer (2010), and was then eligible for an upgrade on the phone. So the only line they could have charged an early termination fee on after the spring of 2009 was my younger daughters line. Now we are all contract free and I am in the process of buying either unlocked phones or go phones to upgrade since I don't want another contract- and we also don't like the phone choices offered thru AT&T's 'upgrade service'. LOL

Anyhoo- if you currently have no phones under contract, and the plan you have allows additional lines to be added, then the only phone that will have a contract is the added line. Adding an additional line will NOT send all your phones back to the beginning of a 2 yr. contract.

HOWEVER... LOL, always a but, right? The family plan I have only allows me 3 lines. So while it did not effect me when I had 2 lines and added the 3rd, if I wanted to add my mother at this time, I would now have to go to a different plan, one that would allow 4 lines- and if I were to do that, then we would all be under a new 2 yr. contract.

    Additionally...
You don't need a phone but you still need to get the sim and have it activated- in which case you will be charged the $36.00 activation fee, but the contract is usually on the phone itself- they use the phone contract to try to sucker you in on a phone upgrade in order to get you into another contract. I can't see them putting a contract on the sim, and I have never heard of them being able to put a contract on a phone they did not sell you. So, I don't believe you would end up with a contract on the new line unless you actually get a phone from them.

Kind of confusing, eh? Sorry I'm not the best at explaining, but I hope you're able to understand enough of what I've said to know better where you stand.

    Hope this helps.

    God Bless-

Simple answer: Yes, you can use a GoPhone on a family plan.
More complicated answer: While you can use a GoPhone on a regular postpaid plan, I am not sure if they will allow you to add it without a contract. It will physically work fine, because all you have to do is put in a new SIM card, but they might or might not allow you to add it without a contract. I have heard contradicting stories about whether they will. Some people have claimed to have done it without a contract and some people say that you cannot. They do allow you to go no contract if you bring your own equipment or buy a phone at retail cost, and technically you are bringing your own equipment, because you already own it. I suppose it will depend on the rep you deal with.

    Curious George
I have an AT&T phone with a contract. My wife uses this phone 100% of the time. My 2nd phone is a AT&T Go Phone which I use. I have low usage. I can load $25.00 on my Go Phone and it can last 2 or 3 months..

I am thinking of getting rid of my land phone and going totally cellular. Will AT&T allow my Go Phone to be added to a family plan? I really don't want to get another phone or be locked in another 2 year commitment. I was just curious if they would do something like that..
