I know it's already been said here, but all you have to do is get the most recent backup of your phone. Plug it into iTunes, make sure that your device is selected on the left (It should automatically back it up when you connect it), When you plug your new iPhone into the computer it should give you the option to set up as a new device or restore from back up. All you have to do at that point is restore to back up. All of your SMS, pics, music, or anything else that was on the old phone should go to your new phone. Any more questions, just ask!

I'm sure I you right click your phone icon in iTunes it brings up a couple of options. One of those should be backup. That's what I did when I got a replacement and it backed up everything.
If you want to more information about iPhone Files Transfer, pls refer these tutorials:

connect your iphone with computer and open itunes, when itunes recognize your iphone, open the info tab and select to sync address book contacts, then click “apply”. If this is your first using iphone I suggest you go to apple’s support website to learn more basic uses, if you tired of itunes you can choose other iphone transfer to do your backup.then transfer the contact from you pc to iphone4 .

Besides what mentioned above, i like to share you a page about iPhone Transfer Backup Reviews, which included transferring iPhone SMS/contacts and other contents to computer/iTunes.
    Good luck!!
Are you upgrading to a new device? All you have to do is plug the 3GS into your computer and do a sync and back up. Then disconnect the 3GS, plug in the iPhone 4 and do a restore from the back up.

If i'm not mistaken you plug your 3GS into itunes and hit Backup, then plug your 4G and hit restore. All done!
