George Kontos Disputes Overcharges By AT&T And Wins Settlement

George Kontos Disputes Overcharges By AT&T And Wins Settlement | digtriad.com

Forsyth County, NC -- He fought a multi-billion dollar corporation, and won. Now, the check is on its way to George Kontos.

We first told you last week about Kontos' battle with AT&T Mobility. AT&T over-charged him for his data plan, so, he took them to court and won.

But, the company resisted the judge's order to pay back all the money. So, the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office stepped in and applied some pressure.

Today, a representative from AT&T showed up at the Sheriff's Office with a check.

Instead MCI was taken over by an even larger company, Verizon. Now EchoStar has proposed to purchase all of Hughes Communications.

By the way, it was not MCI trying to take over Sprint. It was WorldCom, renamed MCI, which had already acquired a lot of communications carriers such as MCI and CompuServe. Bernard Ebbers' empire collapsed in acounting scandals and bankruptcy.

Battle looms between Justice Department, AT&T, T-Mobile

Legal fight will be Obama administration’s ‘signature antitrust event,’ expert says

"This will be the Obama administration's line in the sand. This will be their signature antitrust event," said University of Baltimore law school professor Robert Lande.

AT&T has said it will fight the case, and its general counsel said it plans to seek an expedited hearing from the judge. Even so, experts say, the company could decide that it is not worth the expense and uncertainty to go to trial.

An AT&T spokeswoman declined to comment.

Two big communications deals, MCI's proposed takeover of Sprint in 1999 and EchoStar Communications Corp's deal to buy Hughes Electronic Corp's DirecTV in 2001 fell apart after the Justice Department challenged the deals.

"highly dangerous to competition and consumers."

Senate antitrust leader opposes AT&T/T-Mobile merger | Signal Strength - CNET News

These mergers serve no positive purpose and certainly have never helped the economy nor improved products offered to the public. You'd think that the Republicans who claim they favor competition would be up in arms at the reduction in competition this merger would produce -- but instead they remain silent as the private sector creates yet another company that will be too big to be allowed to fail and that will only lead to higher prices and poorer service (because if the AT&T culture prevails in the new company, the poor T-Mobile customers will have to live with AT&T's abysmal customer service and high prices).

AT&T sues customers seeking to block T-Mobile deal

AT&T sues customers seeking to block T-Mobile deal | Reuters

AT&T Inc is turning to the federal courts to thwart an effort led by law firm Bursor & Fisher to derail AT&T's $39 billion takeover bid for Deutsche Telekom AG's T-Mobile.

In eight lawsuits filed last week, AT&T accused Bursor & Fisher and a second plaintiffs' firm, Faruqi & Faruqi, of trying to pressure AT&T into "an extortionate settlement" by encouraging AT&T customers to file multiple claims against the merger.

Bursor & Fisher launched a "Fight the Merger" campaign in July, saying the megadeal would violate federal antitrust law and restrict competition. So far, Bursor & Fisher has filed 26 arbitration demands and more than 900 notices of dispute on behalf of AT&T customers who oppose the merger.

T-Mobile acquisition of great concern to lawmakers, AT&T employees

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee, D-Wash., wants a federal hearing in Seattle on AT&T's proposed acquisition of Bellevue-based T-Mobile USA. After expressing his concerns over the deal last month, the companies failed to adequately detail how the deal could affect T-Mobile consumers and employees alike, Inslee said.

"American consumers face diminishing choice and higher bills at a time of increasing profitability for the dominant wireless companies in today's marketplace. As a critical public resource, the airwaves should be used to advance the public interest and not concentrated in the hands of a few and thereby limiting choices for consumers. The federal agencies involved should view any further consolidation in the wireless industry with considerable skepticism."

Why Killing AT&T-Mobile Is a Good Thing

    http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/...is-good-thing/

Right now, users save $20 to $50 a month by choosing T-Mobile over AT&T and Verizon (the number one carrier), according to Consumer Reports. Indeed, AT&T has been curtailing services—eliminating the unlimited data plans, for example—and increasing prices, such as charging 20 cents for a text message. And it remains one of the most expensive carriers in the U.S. in the growing smartphone arena.

Deciphering cell phone plans in the U.S. is a black art, but a careful look at a typical plan shows how expensive mobile service is. If you don't want to get nickel and dimed to death, AT&T offers an unlimited voice, text and 2GB of data for $114.99 a month. If you exceed the monthly 2GB data limit, AT&T will charge you an additional $10 a month per GB (and data doesn't roll over like voice minutes).

The annual cost to the consumer: a whopping $1,379.88 -- assuming you never buy a phone app or subscribe to any other special services.

On the other hand, T-Mobile has unlimited text, talk and data for $79.99 a month. It doesn't charge extra for more data usage, but it will slow your connection if you exceed 2GB within a month. Total annual cost: just $959.88, $420 less than AT&T.

If AT&T and T-Mobile become one, which pricing plan do you think the new company will adopt?

AT&T Bid for T-Mobile Faces California Review

AT&T Bid for T-Mobile Faces California Review - Bloomberg

Thank god we have some fighters in this country..

The public-interest group Consumer Watchdog has recommended rejecting the deal, saying it will lead to higher prices.

“Once known for its low prices, T-Mobile has already begun increasing its rates and decreasing options in anticipation of the merger,” Consumer Watchdog said in a letter to regulators, including Sandoval, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski.

Does writing it twice add credibility? It is unethical for a law firm to solicit clients for specific suits in many states unless they have a prior family or business relationship with the potential clients.

Law firm strikes back at AT&T over merger

Law firm strikes back at AT&T over merger | Reuters

With its "Fight the Merger" campaign, Bursor & Fisher is seeking to stop the mega-deal by inundating AT&T with arbitration claims. The firm, which historically handled consumer class actions against AT&T, maintains the merger would violate federal antitrust law and stifle competition in the wireless market. The firm is using its website to recruit AT&T customers willing to initiate arbitration proceedings.

Hrm, I do agree that a merger could drive up prices, but I don't believe this will lead to worse service and sub-standard phones. It's not like AT&T would be the only carrier. They've been through several mergers in the past, although this would be the biggest.

    NOPE :

AT&T's claim that the takeover will help improve network quality makes no sense. T-Mobile's network overlaps almost entirely AT&T's. And AT&T already has more spectrum than any other company. In most areas, AT&T already holds at least 40 MHz of spectrum it is not even using. AT&T is keeping that spectrum off the market, which prevents competitors from using it to provide better service at lower prices.

Read more: Report: AT&T pays $6B if T-Mobile deal fails | The Digital Home - CNET News

Citing anonymous sources, the news service reported yesterday that AT&T would need to pay $6 billion, including $3 billion in cash, to T-Mobile USA's parent company if the deal falls through. That figure would also reportedly include giving Deutsche Telekom $2 billion in spectrum and $1 billion in a "roaming agreement," Reuters says.

Cell-phone service deal would kill competition

    Why AT&T

You think AT&T’s Stephenson’s any different? His customers have been miserable for years, yet in the past three years he’s pocketed an incredible $72 million.
No kidding, $72 million, while his stockholders actually lost money.

Unbelievable. Imagine what he would have made if his stockholders had made a profit!
The company spent $4 million on campaign contributions in the last election cycle, most of it through a Political Action Committee, says the Center for Responsive Politics. The biggest beneficiary? House Speaker John Boehner.

This is about removing competition. Rigging the market. Taking away your choice.

Get ready for even worse service.

    Get ready for worse products.

    Get ready to be gouged.

MOST IMPORTANT HOW TO ACT :

Write to your Congressman. Write to your Senator. Write to the Federal Communications Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice, both of of which must approve the deal.
