great post, when you do a buch of small things, they add up to a greater battery life. Push notifications, brightness level of the screen, and connecting to WiFi are at the top of the list. another hint is some Apps will want to use your location, thats fine as long as the Triangle (GPS Icon) at the top right of the screen goes away when you close out of the app, some Apps may constantly monitor your location.

How-to: Conserve the Battery Life of Your iPhone 5

If you are having issues with the battery life of your new iPhone 5, it may be helpful to disable and modify some settings. Here you will find several easy steps that will help you configure your handset to have an increased battery life.

    Change the Brightness Level

    1. From the home screen, tap Settings
    2. Tap Brightness & Wallpaper – backlight brightness and backlight time-out reduction can improve your battery life.
    3. Tap and drag the Auto-Brightness slider to the desired level. Here you can also choose to switch the feature ON or OFF.
    4. When you are finished, tap Settings –> General -> scroll to and tap Auto-Lock -> now tap the desired option (from 1 to 5 minutes, to never) -> tap General when finished.

    Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS Settings

Another great way to increase your battery life is a smart use of the Wi-Fi. For example, connecting your iPhone 5 to Wi-Fi whenever it is available can increase your battery life with up to 50%. Plus, Wi-Fi is a faster, lower connection that will allow you to make phone calls while browsing the internet. However, if you do not use the Wi-Fi and you leave it on, it will significantly drain your battery life. So make sure to turn it off when you are not using it.

To turn ON or OFF your Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS:

    1. Tap on the Settings menu.
    2. Tap the Wi-Fi switch to turn OFF when you are not actively using it.
    3. Tap Settings again -> Bluetooth – tap the switch to turn it OFF when you are not actively using it.
    4. Tap Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> tap to switch the Location Services OFF when not actively using it -> read the warning message tap Turn Off.

Turn Off Any Other Unused Service

    1. Quickly double-press the Home key to open recent applications.
    2. Tap and hold an application that you want to delete until a red minus icon appears.
    3. Tap the red minus icon.
    4. Repeat the action for the other applications if desired.
    5. The background applications should now be closed.

Set Your iPhone 5 to Download and Sync Less Often

    1. From the home screen, tap Settings.
    2. Scroll to and tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
    3. Then under Accounts tap Fetch New Data.
    4. If Push is enabled, turn the feature OFF.
    5. Under Fetch – tap the desired update frequency.
    6. Tap Mail when finished.

    Turn Off Vibrate Notifications

    1. From home screen tap Settings -> then tap on Sounds
    2. Under Vibrate, tap the switch to disable both Vibrate on Ring and Vibrate on Silent.
    3. Tap the Home key.

Your iPhone 5 should now be properly configured to have an increased battery life. In addition to this, you can download a Battery Defender application and keep a close eye on the signal bar. As having a low signal, will cause your phone to use more battery power.
