I use the MO+ app on my iPhone 4 for Google Voice. It's not like the Google Voice app which allows me to make phone calls over wifi. I have thought about dropping cell service, and just getting a hotspot. Google Voice is free and so is the app. Who doesn't like free? Just a note: The app uses the wifi connection on your phone to place the call, so if you don't have unlimited minutes this is great. The call quality depends on your signal strength, but that is also the case with any carrier. This is by far one of the best apps I've downloaded so far.

I agree with quetlychaotic in "because it's cheap, the quality may be sacrificed". I was lookin gfor free, than later for the cheapest solutions for making phone calls but it was just a waste of time and energy. In the end, it has cost more(!) than having a good quality service. Now I use the Ozeki PBX and I am absolutely satisfied with their service.
You can check them here: PBX for Microsoft Windows - VoIP Telephone System with SMS and Webphone support

To reply to quetlychaotic, you will never be able to make free landline calls. I'll tell you why. Landline phones are provided by service providers - and no service providers will allow you to use their million dollar network for free. The only thing you can do is to try to use only ONE network of ONE service provider. It will be billed you as a local call. As I know, the OZeki Phone System XE is the only PBX that is able to connect my call to ANY landline network directly in the world. When I make a call from a country, I'll be connected to that local network where the calle belongs to. So I'll pay only the local tariff. What's interesting, that in many cases there is no fee for calling between landline phones within a city (in Russia for example). In this case your call will be free.

I second to mirumo. And because it’s cheap, the quality may be sacrificed. I also prefer using my network for making local or international calls. But, still, as mentioned to another thread, I am still looking for an app for free LANDLINE calls. But THANKS for the share!

For my long distance relationship, we usually just stick to mobile chatting apps. so yes, VoIP is also a viable option for us when we want to hear each other's voices. That is usually tied down to network speed, so it is not always of the best quality. For local communication, it is still best to use the carrier network

Also, if you have heard of Talkatone: VoIP App - Today, we're going to talk about...Talkatone. It's a free download from the App Store for the iPhone, and available on Google play for the Android. Talkatone essentially taps into your Facebook and/or Google account, connecting you with "friends" or "buddies" from each, respectively. Users may text the former while they can either call or text the latter. Read More
