Meanwhile you can get an iPhone from all carriers in Germany, with a
    contract or without one.

yes, but they can also still be used as iphones if someone wants to
sign up with a carrier. quite a few were unlocked and used on t-mobile
(or other international carriers). or they can be used without any
    carrier as an ipod.

Well with those phones (other than the Blackberry) you could at least
sign up for low cost prepaid service with pay-go data on PagePlus if
they were CDMA Verizon phones. It was really only the Blackberry that
made no sense as a used phone.

What makes you say that? I bought a lot of three second-hand
Blackberrys for $20 plus shipping just to play with. The PDA functions
work without a "service provider". I can keep an address book,
appointment calendar, notepad, etc. I just can't make or receive phone
calls or send and receive e-mail without paying a service provider.

If I needed to add or update contacts, or to send and receive e-mail in
the field I think I would choose a Blackberry. For such usage a QWERTY
keyboard would be a "must have" for me.

If my old but faithful RAZR V3m should fail I might just get a
    Blackberry anyway.

He's referring to the scenario where an iPhone 2G owner replaced the 2G
    with a 3G and then a family member/friend/etc. used the iPhone 2G
essentially as an iPod Touch rather than selling it or activating it on
prepaid AT&T (or AT&T MVNO) or unlocking it for T-Mobile prepaid. I've
seen a lot of this usage of the iPhone 2G, especially by small children
of the iPhone 3G owner who use it essentially as a gaming platform.

What's not clear is why he views this as hilarious. Seems like a good
re-use of the old phone. How many other phones have a second use after
they are no longer practical to use as a phone.

There's not much of a market for used 2G iPhones to use as phones
because when AT&T/Apple switched to the subsidized model (the 2G was
unsubsidized) the 3G models were cheaper than the used 2G phones
(depending on where you were). Now the old 2G 8GB models sell for about
$100, while an 8GB new iPod Touch is about $175. I guess I'd choose an
iPod Touch with a new battery and a warranty over a two year old iPhone,
but if a kid gets the parent's old iPhone for free then it's a different
    story.

Blame Verizon. They were offered the iPhone first, and turned it down.
Then they ran those very clever, but accurate, ads last year making fun
of AT&T's 3G coverage, and the lack of multi-tasking on the iPhone. On
the plus side, it forced AT&T to improve coverage and Apple to add
features, but on the minus side it not endear Verizon to Apple.

No more so than any other carrier.

How many iPhone carriers do you have to choose from?

I have to pity the US. AT&T is just a drag on the iPhone. And not
having several carriers to pick from is not good for the market anyway.
Hell, this is not a market at all.

What typically happened with those original iPhones (what I saw among
colleagues and relatives anyway) is that the old iPhone became their
kid's pseudo iPod Touch (and at least it has a camera!), and the parent
    got a 3G iPhone.

It's certainly a better 2nd life for an old phone than most old phones
enjoy. And it could always be used on a prepaid account on AT&T or
T-Mobile (if unlocked). This is why the resale prices on the older
    iPhones have remained fairly high.

What I find more ridiculous is all the people I know that carry around
an iPod Touch _and_ a Droid. They wanted a smart phone for web access
but in my area AT&T's coverage is quite poor so they would not get an
iPhone, but they want to keep using iPhone/iPod Touch applications and
keep their music on the iPod.
