there is no need to unlock or jailbreak an iphone to use it with
gophone and data only requires changing the apn.

if you don't mind being limited to 2g speeds, t-mobile is an option.

If you say so. But my wifi data is free, and if I get data from cell
towers I have to pay for it.

So to me there is a big difference.

Well, I wasn't trying to pick nits, but data is data, whether it comes
via WiFi or cell towers, (3G, Edge, etc.). But a data *plan*, that's a
fish of a different stripe/color/specie. What I just learned from a day
in Canada, is that data streaming in to populate the Maps on my iPhone
adds up to a lot of "data"..... about $1900.00 worth.

So, a i/GoPhone can still connect to WiFi; very handy.

Maybe they only give them out for free if you are buying airtime. In
my case (and my brother's, which was probably in fall 2010) we got
    free SIMs, with air time.

    Probably true.

Well, maybe. There are complications either way. Getting a SIM at
AT&T is simpler than getting one from ebay, since they'll sell you
minutes and then activate it right there. But I suppose cutting
it down to micro size is less safe than buying a microsim in the first
    place.

I march 2010, AT&T charged me $25 for a SIM card alone (no airtime).

Maybe today they give them out for free, but tormoow, I don't know.

If you want prepaid service, they likely will not give you a micro SIM
which is why it is safer/simpler to buy from ebay and be sure you have
    one before your trip starts.

Whatever. The point is, I didn't need another phone.

Yes. Well, since AT&T stores will give you SIM cards for free (and
activate them for you) maybe ebay isn't such a good place to buy an
    AT&T SIM card.

they activated it for you when you paid for minutes.

if you get an unactivated sim (such as from ebay) and activate it
online, it won't activate in an iphone. been there done that. you need
to put it in something else for activation, and then swap it once it's
    active.

Clarification: popped it out of the card it came attached to, not out
    of another phone.

I just went to the AT&T store, paid them some money for minutes, they
gave me a SIM. Then I popped it out and put it in my son's iPhone.

    Ditto my brother.

there is to sign up. it will not work with an iphone.

*after* you sign up, swap the sim into whatever you want.

Actually, you will be able to simply put your AT&T card into your
    unlocked iPhone.

There is no need to use another phone.

I'm not speculating, I've done this twice, although I understand this
doesn't guarantee that it always works.

yes. they don't need a database:
    <http://www.numberingplans.com/?page=analysis&sub=imeinr>

you will need to activate the gophone account with another phone after
you get to the usa because it will send you a text message and you need
to be in at&t coverage to receive it.

after you sign up, you can swap the sim to the iphone and the chances
that at&t will care are very very low but there are no guarantees since
    it is not officially supported.
