Update: Got a recent update a month or so ago to 4.3 and it has started working. All is well.

I didn't know Note II's could assign individual alert tones for messages. I'm going to try that.

Probably an Android version issue? I'm a new Android user, I have the NOTE II as well and I am able to assign an individual alert tone, so I'm not sure why it doesn't work. It works fine on my fiance's Galaxy SIII Mini though and he has 4.1.2. He's able to set an alert tone. Maybe you should try upgrading the GS3 to the 4.1.2 version and see if it works.

Hrm, maybe this is a bug...

Ok, that IS what it's for. Cool... so what did I miss to make it work? Was there any special place you have to enable it? My wife's is at 4.1.1 so that would explain hers.

My wife has the S III, I didn't see the extra ringtone selection in her contacts app. I do have a backup option (I have uses SMS Popup on my previous phone and really like it), I just don't want to have to use it unless this doesn't pan out. If that isn't what it's for, what DOES it do? If that IS what it's for, how can I make it work (it's my nature).

Hi, Congrats on your Note II.
I had the same issue with my SIII, So I use a third party app called Chomp. Works great!

Just got a Note II, and I love it so far. One thing I noticed, in the Contacts section there is a "Message Alert" which lets me select a seperate notification ringtone. I was thinking that was for SMS
message sounds, but it doesn't work that way (if it's supposed to). Am I missing a step or setting? Does this sound file tie to something else (it doesn't trigger during voicemail from the contact, either)?
