I dont want to pay for the unlock code, clearly that why I want to go this route. In the past I know people have been ale to get unlock codes from their contract network if they are going to travel aboard, and want their phone unlocked so they can buy a local temp sim. hoping they ask for IMEI, so I can just provide mine instead.

Most companies won't even give you an unlock code if you are still under contract with them. So I don't think that would work anyway.

There are vendors on this site that can help you unlock your phone though. Send one of them a message: Cell Phone Market - Cell Phone Forums

I believe they have the IMEI number or serial number of the phone on your friend's record, although I am not very certain. However, I remember I had a problem with my phone before, and they verified my phone's serial number before they assisted me. I'm not sure if the process is the same across other providers.

So say my buddy has smartphone X, and so do I. He is under contract with them and does not need his phone unlocked, I am not under contract, and bought the phone elsewhere, therefore I want to unlock it.

If he calls in to get his phone unlocked, will they now what is phone's info is (aka is IMEI number) or when he calls for an unlock can I just have him provide my IMEI number for my phone, and get mine unlocked? Thanks.
