I just noticed that the cables that don't work on the USB wall charger (both aftermaket and LG) do work when charging from my desktop. any idea what that means?

    Thanks.

I would imagine others have had similar problems, yes.

This thread on verizon confirms that the cable that comes with the LG Cosmos is only for charging: https://community.verizonwireless.co.../176879/page/2

Neither the original one or the new ones have anything on them. Just the two ends and a cable. I think that the big round things occcasionally found on cables are ferrite rings to retard interference.

This must be a big issue for cellphone users wanting extra charging cables. It can't be just me, can it?

Well on some phones a charging cable and data cable are the same thing, but others, like yours I'm guessing are treating them differently.

Perspective is looking straight on, yes.

btw, on the original cable is there a black plastic thing? the difference could also be a resister.

So, it is either a charging cable or a data cable, but not both. Wow, great work Mr. Holmes!!! Do think that D+/- could be open to work for charging or only shorted would do?

OH, also, what is the perspective of the drawing of the MicroUSB connector? Looking at the male end of a cable straight on?

I looked into it and the connectors are pretty much standard except for the samsung OTG connector that uses the 4th pin. However, for charging cables only, the D+ and D- wires are shorted. The cables you bought are probably made for data too. Some phones will charge via usb, but at a slower rate. I'm guessing that your phones will not (because they are seeing the D+/D- connections), which is why you are getting an error.

My phone is an LG Cosmos. (thanks for the new thread, sorry if I threadcrapped). Aren't these cable specs standardized? I would think that a microUSB cable is a microUSB cable electrically, though some may be better made than others (more durable, gold plating, strain reliefs ,etc). I know that if I contract Verizon, they would just say to use a Verizon cable. Thanks for the reply. Good to hear from someone.

What models are the LG phones? It's certainly possible that the plugs are wired differently.

I am at a loss. The phones in our house use the MicroUSB charging/data port.I have purchased a wall outlet USB charging unit and wanted a short cable for it. The detachable USB cable that came with the original OEM charger works fine on the new charger but NONE of the aftermarket cables that I have purchased work. Both my LG dumbphone and my wife's Samsung Strat II give a message that the cables are incompatible!! What am I missing here?? Is there a specific set of specs for phone MicroUSB cables? I thought that MicroUSB cables are all wired the same. I am afraid to buy any more cables! Our provider is Verizon (if that matters).

    Thanks!
