Apple and Samsung have been at each other’s throats over the last few years and the competition between both these technology giants seems to be reaching an all time high in recent months. The Apple iPhone 5 was the last phone which had inputs from the late Steve Jobs and many people have wondered whether Apple will be the same without him. Samsung on the other hand have created the true smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S4. While the Apple iPhone 5 was released a good six months before the Samsung Galaxy S4 it still is Apple’s flagship model until the release of the Apple iPhone 5s later this year. So how do both these phones compare against each other? Let’s find out:-

    Size and weight

In terms of size and weight no one has been able to do a better job than Apple in terms of fitting so much technology into such a small device. The iPhone 5 measures just 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm which is much smaller than the Galaxy S4’s 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm. But you have to consider the fact that the Galaxy S4 has a much larger screen. In terms of thickness, there is just a 0.3 mm difference between both the phones. In terms of weight though the iPhone 5 is almost 20 g lighter than the Galaxy S4.

But a smartphone should never be too bulky anyway, should it? I believe Apple deserves this point.

    Display

When Apple got the previous point simply because it was more compact, it only makes sense to award this point to Samsung simply because it uses superior technology. The iPhone 5 has a 4.0” IPS LCD touch screen whereas the Galaxy S4 has a 5.0” Super AMOLED touch screen. This means that while the iPhone 5 offers a maximum resolution of 1,136 x 640 pixels the Galaxy S4 offers a maximum resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. There is no point in spending too much time here, the facts ***** it out quite well.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 has a display and screen resolution second to none. Samsung gets this point.

    Memory & Storage

There really isn’t much to separate both these smart phones when it comes to memory and storage. You could say that the Galaxy S4 has 2 GB of RAM which is double what the iPhone 5 offers with its 1 GB of RAM. But, when you actually use both the phones you will see that there isn’t much of a difference between both. The iPhone 5 is sold in 16, 32 and 64 GB versions while the Galaxy S4 is sold in just a 16 GB version but allows expandable memory up to 64 GB.

There really isn’t much of a difference is there?

    Camera

This is one point where Samsung really outdoes itself. The Galaxy S4 comes with an amazing 13 MP camera on the back and a 2 MP camera on the front. The iPhone 5 comes with an 8 MP camera on the back and just a 1.2 MP camera on the front. Samsung should be awarded this point for the simple reason that it has a bigger camera. There may be some people that feel having a bigger camera doesn’t necessarily mean it is better. But then you also have to consider all of the features on the Galaxy S4. Whether it is smile detection, voice activation or digital zoom, the iPhone 5 has no answers.

A superior camera means this point goes to Samsung.

    OS & Performance

The Galaxy S4 runs on the latest Android operating system, 4.2.2 (Jellybean). The iPhone 5 runs on the latest Apple operating system as well, the iOS 6. But with the recent announcement of iOS 7, it seems everyone has forgotten what the iOS 6 offered. It was a significant improvement over iOS 5. But still, it seemed to be missing something. It was just the same old operating system with some new additions. How can you expect me to avoid this point to Apple when they haven’t even tried to win it? Samsung, on the other hand, have hit the nail on the head with Jellybean. In terms of features and compatibility. Nothing can compare.

Samsung picks this point for proving that the east is more technologically advanced than the west.

    Battery

There are very few cell phone manufacturers in the world today that can compete with Samsung when it comes to battery life. And by making such a light cell phone, Apple had to compromise somewhere. They chose the battery for this. The Samsung Galaxy S4 has a huge 2,600 mAh battery which offers a stand by time of more than 15 days whereas the Apple iPhone 5 has just a 1,440 mAh battery which offers a stand by time of just 9 days. But if you actually use all the features of the Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5, you will find the Galaxy S4 can get you through the day with ease while the iPhone 5 has trouble lasting even a few hours.

No doubts here, the point goes to the Samsung Galaxy S4.

    Price

As mentioned above, both Samsung and Apple have been competing for the number one spot for a while now and this is evident with the pricing as well. You can pick up the Apple iPhone 5 for $ 669.50 and you can get the Galaxy S4 for $ 689.99. Not much of a difference considering all the extra features available on the Galaxy S4.

I guess this is going to be the first comparison where the costlier phone gets the point. Yup, the Galaxy S4 clearly offers better value for money.

    Conclusion

We have a clear winner here. The Samsung Galaxy S4 sweeps the floor with the Apple iPhone 5, four to one. Looks like there is a lot more Apple will have to do with their phones in the future than just iOS 7 unless they want Samsung to run away with the lead. What can Apple do to regain their number 1 spot? Guess we just have to wait and see.
