I have been reviewing top-end cell phones for a while now and thought it was finally time to take a look at some mid level cell phones. The two phones I have chosen for this comparison are quite similar in many ways and hopefully this comparison will help pick a winner between them. The two phones in question are the Samsung Galaxy Ace 3 and the LG Optimus L4 II. Which one will come out on top? Read on to find out...

    Size and weight

In terms of size the Galaxy Ace 3 measures 121.2 x 62.7 x 10 mm and the Optimus L4 II measures 112.5 x 64.7 x 11.9 mm. You will see that the Ace 3 is longer and thinner than the Optimus L4 II while the Optimus L4 II is wider than the Galaxy Ace 3. What does this mean? It means the Galaxy Ace 3 is easier to hold. It is also lighter if only by 5 g at 120 g.

It’s only fair to award this point to Samsung. The Galaxy Ace 3 is off to a good start.

    Display

When you talk about displays in mid level phones, these phones are pretty much as good as it gets. The Galaxy Ace 3 has a 4.0” TFT screen and the Optimus L4 II has a 3.8” IPS LCD screen. Even though the Optimus L4 II has a slightly smaller screen it is running on IPS LCD technology. That is amazing. But when we look at the pixel density the Galaxy Ace 3 is much superior with 233 ppi as opposed to the 152 ppi of the Optimus L4 II. So where does this point go?

It goes to the Galaxy Ace 3 because pixel density matters a lot more than anything else when it comes to display quality.

    Memory & Storage

So the Galaxy Ace 3 has 1 GB of RAM which makes it one of the fastest mid level phones out there today. The 512 MB on the Optimus L4 II just doesn’t perform as well. Even in terms of storage, the Galaxy Ace 3 offers expandable memory up to 64 GB while the Optimus L4 II offers expandable memory only up to 32 GB. In terms of usable built in memory, both cell phones are pretty much the same at 4 GB and 5 GB for the Optimus L4 II and the Galaxy Ace 3 respectively.

There was only one winner here, the Galaxy Ace 3.

    Camera

There isn’t much you can expect from mid-range cell phones when it comes to the camera. The Galaxy Ace 3 comes with a 5 MP camera on the back while the Optimus L4 II comes with a 3 MP camera. The Galaxy Ace 3 also comes with a VGA camera on the front while the Optimus L4 II doesn’t have a front camera. This means video calling is a definite pain for anyone who buys the LG Optimus L4 II.

This makes it four in a row for the Galaxy Ace 3.

    OS & Performance

The Galaxy Ace 3 is running on the latest Android operating system 4.2.2 JellyBean. The Optimus L4 II on the other hand is also running on Jellybean albeit on an older version (4.1). Both these cell phones are pretty well matched when it comes to the hardware. It is because of the low RAM and built in memory that the Optimus L4 II underperforms. I’m guessing there will be an update for the Optimus L4 II to 4.2.2 JellyBean soon though. But that isn’t exactly exciting.

Point number five for the Galaxy Ace 3. This is no longer a competition. It’s a massacre.

    Battery

Finally LG shows some signs of life. The battery on the Optimus L4 II is 1,700 mAh while the battery on the Galaxy Ace 3 is slightly bigger at 1,800 mAh. In terms of battery life, I know Samsung will never let you down but LG is quite dependable as well. And considering the Optimus L4 II won’t really require much battery to run, it should do pretty well even with a smaller battery.

Finally some change. This one’s a draw.

    Price

I’m not too sure about the price of either of these cell phones, but I’m guessing they will both be priced within $ 200. In all honesty, the Galaxy Ace 3 is much better than the Optimus L4 II and the only way anyone would go for the LG cell phone is if it is cheaper. A lot cheaper.

I can’t really award this point to anyone.

    Conclusion

Almost a whitewash for the Samsung Galaxy Ace 3. It wins by 5 points to zero. What more could you want out of a comparison? Looks like Samsung is on its way to ruling the mid-size cell phone market as well. Will Nokia be able to do anything about this or will they just bow to the Asian giant? I’ll compare some of the mid-level Nokia phones with the Galaxy Ace soon.
