You would have probably read about one of the versions of the Galaxy S4 that Samsung had released, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active earlier this week. As promised, here is the comparison between another variant, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom and the Samsung Galaxy S4. The Galaxy S4 Active didn’t do too well. In my opinion, Samsung would have been better off without it. Will the Galaxy S4 Zoom prove it deserved a separate release? Read on to find out...

    Size and weight

I wasn’t too surprised when I got down to comparing the size and weight of both these smart phones. The Galaxy S4 is quite compact at 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.90 mm and weighs a meager 130 g. In all honesty, the Galaxy S4 has been used in the past few months as the perfect example of how big a smart phone should be and how much it should weigh. While the Galaxy S4 Zoom is quite standard when it comes to length and width, it’s the thickness that ruins it for this smart phone. The Galaxy S4 Zoom measures 125.5 x 63.5 x 15.4 mm. That is as thick as most digital camera’s out there. It is quite heavy as well at 208 g. Let’s just say, if you chose the Galaxy S4 Zoom, it would be because of its compactness.

This point goes to the Galaxy S4.

    Display

For a smart phone that focuses mainly on its camera, the Galaxy S4 Zoom doesn’t really give you a good display to view your pictures. The Galaxy S4 Zoom comes with a 4.3” Super AMOLED touch screen that has just 256 ppi. That is not too impressive when compared with the 5.0” Super AMOLED touch screen of the Galaxy S4 which comes with 441 ppi. You are going to be clicking some amazing photographs on the Galaxy S4 Zoom, but if you don’t have the display to view them properly, what use is it really? I am really disappointed with Samsung here. I mean, I don’t see a reason why the Galaxy S4 Zoom couldn’t have 300+ ppi.

The Galaxy S4 picks up this point as well and this comparison looks like it’s going in the same direction as the Galaxy S4 Active comparison.

    Memory & Storage

The Galaxy S4 Zoom doesn’t have the same memory or storage options as the Galaxy S4 but it would be unfair to say that it isn’t just as good. The Galaxy S4 Zoom comes with 1.5 GB of RAM while the Galaxy S4 comes with 2 GB of RAM. Both smart phones allow memory expansion up to 64 GB though the Galaxy S4 comes in 16, 32 and 64 GB versions while the Galaxy S4 Zoom is only available in a 5 GB version. But, if you actually get down to using both smart phones, only a professional will be able to notice the difference between both of them.

My best judgment would be to call this point a draw.

    Camera

This is the one point where the Galaxy S4 Zoom gets a chance to shine. There is no doubt that the 13 MP camera on the Galaxy S4 can provide some excellent photographs but when it is compared with the 16 MP camera on the Galaxy S4 Zoom, there really is no competition. The Galaxy S4 Zoom also comes with a Xenon flash which guarantees some extremely bright pictures even in the darkest of places. There is no shortage of features on the Galaxy S4 Zoom. You could even say it has every feature a regular digital camera would have. It also supports full HD video recording at 60 fps which is outstanding for a smart phone. And the cherry on the top is the 10x optical zoom.

This point definitely goes to the Galaxy S4 Zoom.

    OS & Performance

Both these smart phones run on the latest Android operating system 4.2.2 (JellyBean) and I believe any future updates should be available simultaneously on both smart phones. One thing that disappoints with the Galaxy S4 Zoom though is that it has a Samsung Exynos 4212 chip. That is a severe step back for Samsung in terms of system chips. The smart phone also runs on a Dual core, 1500 MHz, ARM Cortex-A9 processor which is severely outdated. I’m sure Samsung has a reason for releasing this smart phone which such outdated hardware and I will be glad if anyone can enlighten me.

The Galaxy S4 wins this point simply because the Galaxy S4 Zoom is running on hardware from 2011.

    Battery

There isn’t any information available about the battery life of the Galaxy S4 Zoom apart from the fact that it has a 2,330 mAh battery. Samsung is known for releasing smart phones with superior battery lives but what about a smart phone with such a large camera? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. The Galaxy S4 comes with a 2,600 mAh battery that offers a stand by time of 15.4 days which is pretty decent for a top-end smart phone.

Without sufficient information on the Galaxy S4 Zoom, it would be unfair to award this point to either smart phone. Therefore, it’s a draw.

    Price

This is another point where the Galaxy S4 Zoom is far better than the Galaxy S4. As most of you would know, the Galaxy S4 can be purchased free of a contract for $ 690. What’s amazing is that the Galaxy S4 Zoom can be purchased free of a contract for under $ 540. That is a lot of money considering the Galaxy S4 Zoom can double up as a camera as well.

I guess this point will go to the Galaxy S4 Zoom just because it is so much cheaper.

    Conclusion

Well there you have it. The Galaxy S4 Zoom is better when it comes to its camera and its price. But this is supposed to be a comparison between a couple of smart phones and I’m guessing the camera isn’t going to be the number one comparison point. The Galaxy S4 is superior in all other aspects. If you ask me, the Galaxy S4 Zoom is basically a digital camera with smart phone capabilities. Would you really want to spend so much money on a digital camera? Wouldn’t it be better to purchase a digital camera separately?
