It's hard to say why it's not connecting to your wi-fi router at a higher speed. It may have something to do with it not negotiating protocols correctly. I would have him connect to another router somewhere else, like at a Tim Hortons or whatever is close by.

Regarding the cellular connection - is he using a different local sim or the same sim from his provider?

Sorry for the double post here, but I was just thinking, With standard troubleshooting we used to remove the battery for a few min to jump start the phone into grabbing a local tower, however the Iphone 5's battery does not come out , as I understand it. Does anyone know if there is an alternate way to get it to grab a local tower? I'm wondering if it is still routing his calls at his home.

No he didn't have any issues before, though before he was still in China and it's his first time in Canada.

Is the wi-fi signal strong for the phone? Has he previously had issues with lousy wi-fi signals?

Howdy folks, I was hoping someone could help me with this.

I just recently took in a Chinese international student. When he connects to our WI-FI he is getting very slow internet speeds, when I test my desktop I'm showing a download of 19.7 Megs, when he tests his phone he's getting barely 250 k .

I have a sneaking suspicion that it has to do that it is an international phone. It's an IPhone 5 though I can't really check the settings or anything because I don't actually speak Chinese myself.

Has anyone else ran into this situation or have another suggestion?

    Thanks in advance.
