I doubt you'd notice unless you have a whole lot of apps running.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini is quite a handy little device. Now, it is supposed to be a “mini” version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and it is obvious that there will be cut backs here and there. But how does it match up to another “mini”? Heard of the Motorola Droid Mini? It’s the “mini” version of the Motorola Droid and was released along with the Motorola Droid MAXX and the Motorola Droid Ultra. So how do both these mini smart phones stack up against each other and which one is better? Read on to find out...

    Size and weight

In terms of size, there are few manufacturers out there that can make better smart phones than Samsung. The Galaxy S4 Mini is a perfect example of this with its measurements of 124.6 x 61.3 x 8.94 mm which is amazing considering all its hardware. But, Motorola have managed to trump even Samsung with the measurements of the Droid Mini which measures 121.25 x 61.3 x 8.9 mm. But, if you think the Droid Mini is going to run away with this point, think again. The Galaxy S4 Mini makes a comeback in the weight category. It weighs, 107 g which is much lighter than the 130 g of the Droid Mini. Maybe it’s the Kevlar body?

This point is going to be a draw since one smart phone is better in terms of weight and the other in terms of size.

    Display

The displays on both these smart phones are quite different. While the Galaxy S4 Mini comes with a 4.3” Super AMOLED touch screen with a maximum resolution of 960 x 540 pixels while the Droid Mini comes with a 4.3” LCD touch screen with a maximum resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels. In terms of pixel density, the Droid Mini is far ahead with 342 ppi while the Galaxy S4 Mini has an embarrassing 256 ppi.

The Galaxy S4 Mini does come with scratch resistant glass but that isn’t enough and even though the Droid Mini has an LCD touch screen, I will still award the point to the Droid Mini for a larger pixel density and resolution.

    Memory & Storage

The Galaxy S4 Mini comes with 1.5 GB of RAM and internal storage of 8 GB which doesn’t look that great in front of the Droid Mini that comes with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. But, the Galaxy S4 Mini does permit expandable storage options up to 64 GB which gives it an upper hand in this point of the comparison. I mean, the Droid Mini may operate faster, but without enough storage space, how much can you really do?

This point will go to the Galaxy S4 Mini for its expandable storage capabilities.

(Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini - One / Motorola Droid Mini - One)

    Camera

Comparing the cameras on both these smart phones can be a little tricky. While the Galaxy S4 Mini has an 8 MP camera, the Droid Mini comes with a 10 MP camera. On the other hand, the Droid Mini lacks additional features with its camera while the Galaxy S4 Mini has HDR, night mode, panorama, voice activation, geo tagging, etc. to name a few. Both smart phones allow you to record videos at 1080p and while the Galaxy S4 Mini has a 1.9 MP front camera, the Droid Mini has a 2 MP front camera.

The additional 2 MP on the back camera of the Droid Mini can’t really do too much since the smart phone lacks may essential features. Therefore, this point goes to the Galaxy S4 Mini with its smaller, but far more capable camera.

(Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini - Two / Motorola Droid Mini - One)

    OS & Performance

Both these smart phones run on the Android operating system 4.2.2 (JellyBean) although the Galaxy S4 Mini has a few tweaks thanks to the Samsung TouchWiz Nature UX 2.0 user interface. As far as hardware is concerned, the Galaxy S4 Mini comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 MSM8930 chip and dual core, 1700 MHz, Krait 300 processor and Adreno 305 graphics. On the other hand, the Droid Mini comes with the Motorola X8 chip and dual core, 1700 MHz, processor and 400 MHz, quad core graphics.

Both smart phones are pretty similar here and that’s why this point is a draw.

(Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini - Two / Motorola Droid Mini - One)

    Battery

The Galaxy S4 Mini comes with a 1,900 mAh battery that offers a standby time of 12.5 days. The Droid Mini comes with a 2,000 mAh battery which offers a standby time of 13 days. Obviously, I can’t award this point to the Droid Mini just because of an extra standby time of 0.5 days.

I’m going to call this one a draw as well.

    Price

If you want to buy the Droid Mini free of contract, you will have to shell out around $ 500 while the Galaxy S4 Mini is available free of contract for $ 460. Now, $ 40 isn’t that much of a difference but considering the fact that the Galaxy S4 Mini is already leading this comparison, I think it’s safe to say the Galaxy S4 Mini offers better value for money.

This point goes to the Galaxy S4 Mini.

(Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini - Three / Motorola Droid Mini - One)

    Conclusion

The final score reads 3 points to 1 in favor of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini. What does this mean? It means, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini is a much better smart phone than the Motorola Droid Mini. The Droid Mini does have a better display but the Galaxy S4 Mini has better storage capabilities and a better camera. You should probably choose between both these smart phones based on what you want most from your “mini.”
