CyanogenMod has now started releasing CM 11 nightly builds for the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4. For those of you who don't know this, CM 11 is based on AOSP Android 4.4 KitKat, and a "nightly" build is a release that is not final. Generally speaking, nightly builds are being released on a daily basis, and with each new build, bugs are being fixed and features are being added.

This guide will allow you to install the latest Android 4.4 CM 11 nightly build on your AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4. Please not that, while this is an official CyanogenMod release, it's not an official Google or Samsung update. As such, CM 11 includes extra features and several improvements, but since the build is not final, you might run into certain bugs as well.

    IMPORTANT – READ BEFORE PROCEEDING

    • This guide has been designed specifically for the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4. Do not attempt to apply this method to any other smartphone or Galaxy S4 variant
    • In order to apply this ROM, you need to have a rooted AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 that runs on the latest version of CWM or TWRP. Don't proceed if you don't meet these prerequisites
    • Your device will be factory reset during the process (unless you come from an older CM 11 nightly). Create backups if necessary
    • This guide will include instructions on how you can create a NANDROID backup
    • You can use the "Helium" app to backup app data
    • The "SMS backup & restore" app can be used to backup text messages, and the "APN Settings Backup & Restore" app can be used to backup your APN settings
    • Your contacts should be backed up onto your Gmail account
    • Before proceeding, you need to enable "USB Debugging" from the "Developer options" menu. Simply go to "Settings" > "About device" and tap "Build number" until the you receive a message confirming that the "Developer Options" menu is visible. Return to "Settings" > "Developer options" and mark the "USB debugging" check box
    • Make sure that your smartphone has at least 60-70% battery life. It's very important that your smartphone does not run out of battery during the installation process
    • Do not skip any steps
    • This is an advanced guide. If you brick / damage your phone or if you lose important data, you cannot hold the developers or anyone else responsible

AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4: Installing Android 4.4 CM 11 Nightly – CWM Recovery Method:

    1. Download the necessary CM 11 zip file by visiting this link. Make sure you download the latest build
    2. Download the Google apps package from this link
    3. After the files have been downloaded, don't unzip them. Connect your smartphone to your computer and copy the files onto your device's storage
    4. Disconnect your smartphone
    5. Reboot your device in CWM recovery. To do so, turn off your smartphone and press and hold the "Volume Up", "Power" and "Home" buttons until you see the recovery logo / screen
    6. You will now create a NANDROID backup that will store your current ROM. To do this, select "backup & restore" and save the file
    7. After the backup has been created, you need to select "data wipeout / factory reset" in order to reset your device. NOTE: this step can be skipped if you already run on an earlier version of CM 11
    8. After the reset, select "Install zip from SD card" > "choose zip from SD card"
    9. Browse the CM 11 zip file and flash it
    10. Now select "Install zip from SD card" again, but this time, browse for the Gapps package downloaded at step 2
    11. Once both files have been flashed, press "+++Go Back+++" and select "Reboot system now"

NOTE: the first time you reboot your device in normal mode will take a while. Don't panic and don't press any buttons. If your smartphone takes more than 10 minutes to reboot, or if your handset is stuck in a boot loop, you need to start over without skipping any steps

AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4: Installing Android 4.4 CM 11 Nightly – TWRP Recovery Method:

    1. Download the CM 11 ROM from this link. You should download the latest available nightly
    2. Download the Gapps zip from this link
    3. Connect your smartphone to your computer and copy the zips onto your handset's storage
    4. After the transfer is complete, disconnect your smartphone from your computer and turn it off
    5. Reboot your AT&T SGS4 in recovery menu. To do so, press and hold the "Volume Down", "Power" and "Home" buttons at the same time. Release the keys once you see the logo
    6. From the recovery menu, select "Backup" and create a backup of your current ROM. Select the data that you wish to backup, name the file and then swipe the "Swipe to Backup" button
    7. Return to the recovery menu and select "Wipe". Go to "Advanced" and select "Wipe cache" as well as "Dalvik cache", and swipe the "Swipe to wipe" button. NOTE: you can skip this step if your smartphone already runs on a CM 11 nightly build
    8. After the wipe, go back to the recovery menu and select "Install"
    9. Browse for the CM 11 zip file and flash it
    10. Now select "Install" again but this time, browse for the Gapps zip file
    11. After both files have been flashed, go back to the recovery menu and select "Reboot"

NOTE: this first reboot may take some time to complete. Be patient. If the reboot takes more than 10 minutes and is stuck, or if the device enters a boot loop, then you'll need to start the guide over without skipping any steps

IMPORTANT: whether you've used CWM or TWRP, you can use the NANDROID backup that you have created, in case you wish to return to your previous ROM. To do so, boot in recovery mode and select "Backup and restore" for CWM, or "Restore" for TWRP.
