While the official Android 4.4 KitKat update has been released a few good weeks ago, it may take some time for the update to arrive on the LG G2. Fortunately, you can still experience the KitKat goodness with the help of custom ROMs. CyanogenMod has recently started launching CM 11 nightly builds for the T-Mobile LG G2, and if you're interested in giving this custom ROM a try, then this guide will allow you to do so.

Keep in mind that, although this is an official CyanogenMod release, it can contain certain bugs due to it being a "nightly" build. On the bright side, CyanogenMod will launch "nightlies" every day. As such, if you install CM 11 now and you run into a bug, that bug could be fixed tomorrow, or in a timely manner.

    IMPORTANT – READ BEFORE PROCEEDING:

    • This guide has been designed specifically for the T-Mobile LG G2 bearing the model number "D801". Don't attempt to apply this guide on any other smartphone or LG G2 variant. If you happen to own the AT&T LG G2 (D800), then you can follow this link instead
    • In order to successfully install this ROM, you will need to have a rooted T-Mobile LG G2 running the latest version of CWM or TWRP recovery. Don't proceed if you don't meet these prerequisites
    • Your T-Mobile LG G2 will go through a factory reset during the process. As such, you should create backups before proceeding
    • You can use the "Helium" app to backup app data
    • The "APN Settings Backup & Restore" app allows you to backup your APN Internet settings, and you can use the "SMS backup & restore" application in order to backup your messages
    • Your contacts should be backed up / synced with your Gmail account
    • This guide will also allow you to create a NANDROID backup
    • Before proceeding, you'll need to enable "USB Debugging". To do so, go to "Settings" > "About phone" and tap "Build Number" until the "Developer Options" menu becomes visible. Then, go back to "Settings", tap "Developer Options" and enable "USB Debugging"
    • Your smartphone needs to have at least 60-70% battery life before proceeding. It's crucial that your device doesn't run out of battery during the installation process
    • This is an advanced guide. Should you brick your device, damage it or if you lose important data, you cannot hold the developers or anyone else responsible
    • Don't skip any steps!

    Entering Recovery Mode:

IMPORTANT: You don't need to follow these steps at this very moment. This is a guide that allows you to reboot your device in Recovery mode (CWM or TWRP, depending on what you're using). Refer to this guide when requested to do so.

    1. Go to the Play Store and download the "Quick Boot" tool
    2. After you've installed the app, open it and select "Recovery" from the menu
    3. Your T-Mobile LG G2 will now reboot in recovery mode

T-Mobile LG G2: Installing Android 4.4 CM 11 Nightly – CWM Recovery Method:

    1. Download the latest CM 11 nightly build available by visiting this link
    2. Since the ROM does not include Google apps, you'll need to download another zip package from this link
    3. Connect your LG G2 to your computer using the USB cable
    4. Copy both zip files onto your phone's storage, but don't unzip the files!
    5. Once you've copied the zips, disconnect your smartphone from your computer
    6. Reboot your T-Mobile LG G2 in recovery mode (refer to the guide above)
    7. In CWM recovery, select "backup & restore" to create a NANDROID backup
    8. Once the backup has been created, select "data wipeout / factory reset", "Wipe cache" and "dalvik cache". NOTE: this step can be skipped if your handset already runs on an earlier version of CM 11
    9. Select "Install zip from SD card" and then select "choose zip from SD card"
    10. Browse and select the CM 11 file downloaded at step 1 and flash it
    11. Select "Install zip from SD card" a second time, but now browse for the Google apps package downloaded at step 2
    12. After the zip files have been flashed, select "+++Go Back+++" and then "Reboot system now". NOTE: The first reboot in normal mode may take several minutes to complete. However, if the process takes longer than 10 minutes, or if your device is stuck in a boot loop, then you'll need to redo the entire guide without skipping any steps

NOTE: should you choose to return to your previous ROM, you can use the NANDROID backup in order to do so. Simply reboot in CWM recovery and select "backup & restore"

T-Mobile LG G2: Installing Android 4.4 CM 11 Nightly – TWRP Recovery Method:

    1. Download the latest available CM 11 nightly by visiting this link
    2. Download the Google apps zip file as well. Here's the link
    3. Connect your T-Mobile LG G2 to your computer via USB
    4. Copy both zip files onto the device's storage. Don't unzip them!
    5. Once the transfer is complete, disconnect your LG G2 and reboot it in recovery mode (refer to the guide above in order to do so)
    6. Select "Backup" in the TWRP recovery menu in order to create a NANDROID backup. You can use this backup at a later point in order to restore your previous ROM
    7. Once the backup is complete, select "Wipe", go to "Advanced" and "Wipe cache" as well as "Dalvik cache". Then, "Swip to Wipe". NOTE: you can skip this step if your T-Mobile LG G2 runs on an earlier CM 11 nightly build
    8. Return to the recovery menu and select "Install". Then, browse for the CM 11 zip file
    9. Select "Install" again and browse for the Gapps zip file
    10. After both zip files have been flashed, go back to the recovery menu and select "Reboot"

NOTE: Keep in mind that the first reboot in normal mode can take several minutes to complete. Don't panic, and don't press any buttons. In case the process doesn't finish in 10 minutes, or if the device is restarting constantly, then you need to redo the whole guide from the very beginning, while making sure that you did not skip any of the steps provided.

NOTE: if CM 11 is not your cup of tea, you can restore your previous ROM using the NANDROID backup. Reboot in TWRP recovery, and selecting "Restore"
