Android 4.4 is out and about, but many non-Nexus owners are not so lucky to take advantage of this latest OS. But, one of the best things about owning an Android device is the fact that you can install custom ROMs on it. In other words, although the KitKat update may have not been officially released on your device, the developer community is constantly offering alternatives.

This is a guide that will allow you to install a CM 11 custom ROM on your Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos. Keep in mind however, that this is not an official release supported by Google or Samsung. As a matter of fact, this particular ROM is not an official CyanogenMod release either. It's a custom ROM based on CM 11 that has been developed by XDA members and developers. As such, this particular release does have a few bugs. Reports indicate that the camera has minor issues, and other problems have been reported in regards to the screenrecorder (isn't working), the FM radio and the audio settings. The biggest issue perhaps, is the fact that for now you can only use one SIM on your dual-SIM Grand Duos.

However, these problems are expected to be fixed soon, so if you still want to test out the current ROM, then read more below.

IMPORTANT – READ BEFORE PROCEEDING:

• This guide and ROM has been designed specifically for the Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos bearing the model number "GT-I9082" or "GT-I9082L". Do not attempt to apply it on any other device or Grand Duos variant
• This guide requires you to have a rooted Galaxy Grand Duos that runs the latest version of CWM or TWRP recovery (both methods are explained below)
• Keep in mind that this is not an official CyanogenMod release. It's been developed by XDA members and it contains certain bugs
• During the installation process you will be required to perform a factory reset. Create backups if necessary
• You can use the "Helium", "SMS Backup & restore" and "APN Settings Backup & Restore" applications in order to backup app data, text messages and APN Internet settings respectively
• Your contacts can be easily backed up by syncing them to your Gmail account
• This guide provides instructions on how to create a NANDROID backup
• Make sure that you have enabled "USB Debugging". To do so, go to "Menu" > "Settings" > "Developer options" and enable the feature
• In order to prevent your smartphone from shutting down during the installation process, make sure that your battery is at least 60-70% full
• This is a guide for advanced users. If you brick / damage your phone, or if you lose important data, you cannot hold the developers or anyone else responsible
• Don't skip any of the steps provided in the guide, and read all the bullet points above before proceeding!

Rebooting in Recovery Mode:

IMPORTANT: Don't follow these steps at this point! This is a small tutorial allowing you to reboot your device in CWM or TWRP recovery mode. You will need to refer to this guide later during the installation process

1. Visit the Play Store and download the "Quick Boot" tool
2. Open the application on your Grand Duos
3. Select "Recovery" from the menu and allow your device to reboot in CWM or TWRP recovery

Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos (GT-I9082 / GT-I9082L): Install Android 4.4 CM 11 – CWM Recovery Method:

1. Copy the custom ROM zip file by visiting this link
2. Copy the Google apps zip file from this link
3. Don't unzip the files!
4. Connect your Grand Duos to your computer using the USB cable
5. Copy both files to your smartphone's SD storage and disconnect your handset once the transfer is complete
6. Reboot your device in recovery mode (refer to the guide above)
7. Create a NANDROID backup by select "backup & restore"
8. After the backup, select "wipe data / factory reset", and make sure that you also select "wipe cache" and "dalvik cache" from the "Advanced" menu
9. Return to the main recovery screen and select "install zip from SD card". Browse for the CM 11 zip file and flash it on your device
10. Go back to the recovery screen and select "Install zip from SD card" again. This time around, select the Google apps zip file
11. Once both zip files have been flashed, select "+++Go Back+++" and "Reboot system now". NOTE: this first reboot can take a while. Don't panic and don't press any buttons. If the process does not finish in 10 minutes, or if your device is boot looping, then you need to start the guide from the top, without skipping any steps

NOTE: You can always use the NANDROID backup to return to your previous ROM. To do so, reboot in CWM recovery and select "backup & restore"
Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos (GT-I9082 / GT-I9082L): Install Android 4.4 CM 11 – TWRP Recovery Method:

1. Download the CM 11 file from this link
2. The ROM does not include Google apps, so you'll need to download a separate Gapps zip file from this link
3. Don't unzip the files!
4. Connect your Galaxy Grand Duos to your computer via USB
5. Copy both zip files from your computer, and paste them onto your phone's SD memory
6. After the transfer is complete, disconnect your phone from your PC
7. Reboot your Grand Duos in recovery mode (refer to the guide above)
8. From TWRP recovery, select "Backup" to create a NANDROID backup of your current ROM. Then, select the type of data that you wish to save, and swipe the "Swipe to Backup" button
9. After the backup, select "Wipe" and go to "Advanced". Then, select "Wipe cache" and "dalvik cache", and swipe the "Swipe to wipe" button
10. Select "Install" from the main recovery screen, and browse for the CM 11 zip file
11. After CM 11 is flashed, select "Install" again. Browse for the Google apps zip and flash it
12. Once both files have been flashed, go back to the main TWRP menu and select "Reboot". NOTE: this first reboot may take several minutes to finish. Don't press any buttons during the process. If your device doesn't reboot in 10 minutes, or if your handset is stuck in a boot loop, then you need to restart the entire guide, without skipping any steps

NOTE: Use the NANDROID backup if you ever decide to return to your previous ROM. To do so, reboot in TWRP recovery, select "Restore" and choose the backup file
