The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 might not be the hottest phablet anymore, but it's still expected to be supported by the Korean manufacturer. In other words, the Android 4.4 update should arrive on the aforementioned device sometime in the future. Until then however, your options are limited: you either wait for the official OTA release, or you apply a KitKat custom ROM on your Note 2.

If you're interested in the latter, then you're in luck, as Team Kang has recently started launching KitKat-based AOKP custom ROMs for the Note 2. This is a guide that will allow you to install the AOKP ROM on the Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

Before moving on, keep in mind that this particular AOKP release is still under development. The ROM is in the "nightly" stages of development, and this means that you may encounter certain bugs. You should also know that AOKP is based on Android 4.4 as well as CM 11. This means that the ROM comes with vanilla Android UI, and the TouchWiz user interface will no longer be available.

    IMPORTANT – READ BEFORE PROCEEDING:

    • Do not try to flash this ROM on any other smartphones aside from Sprint's Galaxy Note 2. If you do, then you'll probably brick your phone
    • In order to apply this ROM, you'll need a rooted Sprint Galaxy Note 2 that runs the latest version of CWM or TWRP recovery
    • Create backups if necessary, as the installation process requires you to factory reset your smartphone
    • The guide includes instructions on how to create a NANDROID backup. This will allow you to return to your current ROM if necessary
    • To backup app data, text messages and / or APN settings, you can make use of applications such as "Helium", "SMS backup & restore" and "APN Settings Backup & Restore"
    • As long as you use a Google account on your Note 2, chances are that your contacts have already been synced with it. Double check before moving on
    • Before starting the flashing process, your smartphone's battery should be at least 70% full
    • Enable USB Debugging before connecting your Note 2 to your computer. Press the "Menu" key while viewing a home screen, go to "Settings" > "Applications" > "Development" and enable "USB Debugging"
    • This is a guide for advanced users. If you brick your phone or you lose important data, you can't hold the developers or anyone else responsible
    • Read the guide carefully and don't skip any steps

Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 2: Install Android 4.4 AOKP Custom ROM via CWM Recovery:

    1. Download the newest AOKP nightly build from this link
    2. Download the Google apps zip file from this link
    3. The zip files should be downloaded on your computer. Don't unzip these files!
    4. Establish a connection between your Galaxy Note 2 and your PC (remember that USB Debugging should be enabled)
    5. Copy both zip files onto your phone's SD storage. Once the transfer is complete, disconnect your Note 2
    6. Power off your smartphone
    7. Reboot your device in CWM recovery mode by pressing and holding "Volume Up", "Home" and "Power"
    8. You will now create a NANDROID backup of your ROM. Select "backup & restore" from the main CWM screen and create the file
    9. After you've created a "restore point" for your ROM, it's on with the factory reset. Select "data wipeout / factory reset", and access the "Advanced" menu to select "wipe cache" and "dalvik cache"
    10. Return to the main recovery screen and select "Install zip from SD card". Then, load the AOKP zip file and downloaded at the first step
    11. Go back to the main CWM screen and select "Install zip from SD card" once more. This time, browse for the Google apps zip file
    12. After the files have been loaded, select "+++Go Back+++" and then "Reboot system now"

NOTE: When you apply a custom ROM, the first reboot usually takes several minutes to complete. If the phone does not reboot in 10 minutes, or if the handset is stuck in a boot loop, then redo the entire guide. Make sure that you've applied the factory reset, that you've wiped the cache and that you haven't missed any steps

NOTE: If AOKP is not what you were looking for, you can restore your previous ROM using the NANDROID backup. To do so, reboot in CWM recovery and select "backup & restore", then load the appropriate backup file

Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 2: Install Android 4.4 AOKP Custom ROM via TWRP Recovery:

    1. First, download the latest AOKP KitKat build from this link
    2. Download the Google apps package by visiting this link
    3. Using the USB cable, establish a connection between your Sprint SG Note 2 and your computer
    4. Transfer the downloaded files to your Note 2's SD storage
    5. Once the zip files have been copied, disconnect your smartphone from your PC and turn it off
    6. You'll now need to enter TWRP recovery. To do so, press and hold "Volume up", "Power" and "Home" simultaneously
    7. Tap "Backup", mark the check boxes associated with the type of data that you wish to save, rename the file and then swipe the "Swipe to Backup" button. This will create a NANDROID backup of your current ROM. Don't skip this step!
    8. Once the backup has been created, factory reset your device. Tap "Wipe", and from the "Advanced" menu, select "wipe cache" as well as "dalvik cache". To complete this operation, swipe the "Swipe to wipe" button
    9. While on the main TWRP screen, tap "Install" and browse for the AOKP zip file
    10. After the ROM has been flashed, select "Install" again and install the Google apps zip file as well
    11. When both zips have been applied, go back to the TWRP main menu and tap "Reboot"

NOTE: Generally speaking, after you apply a custom ROM, the first reboot will take several minutes to finish. This is normal, so be patient and don't press any buttons. However, if the process does not end in 10 minutes, or if your smartphone keeps restarting, then the ROM has not been successfully flashed. In this case, you'll need to retry the entire guide, while ensuring that you haven't missed any steps. Also, make sure that you have properly reset your smartphone and wiped the cache.

NOTE: Should you choose to return to your previous ROM, use the NANDROID backup to achieve this. Simply reboot the Note 2 in TWRP recovery and tap "Restore". Then, select the appropriate backup file and load it.
