tavenger: I know, I was confused for a minute too! There's also a phone called the Hummer H1, just to be extra confusing.

The phone is made in China, but it is, at least it claims to be, up to USA military code for waterproof, dustproof, shockproof. IP68 as well, which at least officially means it can be submerged in a meter of water for a half hour or so. All I really need is a waterproof(not resistant!) smartphone. The dustproof and shockproof are just extra bonuses. Can anyone vouch for a specific phone? I've come across the Land Rover A8, Hummer H1, Discovery V5, G'Zone Commando, etc.

Yes, I did list a bunch of MVNO's. I considered going with a major carrier but the prices are ridiculous for unlimited text/data. Minutes are not nearly as important. Is there a better option than MVNO's? If not, can anyone vouch for a MVNO in particular?

Sorry for the barrage of questions, I'm almost done. So, I need to purchase a SIM card, a microsd card, anything else? Are these made to a standard, or do I have to find one that fits my specific phone? How do I know if it will fit?

Thanks tavenger for your help. I've been missing my phone for almost a week now, and I'm getting a little stir-crazy not being able to contact anyone.

oh, and as far as the camera, megapixels don't matter as much as the hardware used for them. 5mp is probably fine, but you have no way of knowing how good the pictures are that the camera takes.

Phones never come with SIM cards unless they are purchased directly from the carrier. This one probably does not come with a microsd card either. I would purchase that separately since you never know what you're getting from some of these online stores.

I thought for a minute you were talking about a car

Android 4.2 is very good, yes. I would be more concerned that this phone isn't widely available and it probably made very cheaply in China.

The providers you mentioned are all prepaid MNVO carriers, meaning they all use major carriers towers, but are 'secondary' to their direct customers. They're generally cheaper than major carriers, but it's sometimes hit or miss with service reception.

    Hello all,

I lost my phone a few days ago(don't worry, it was a horrible one anyways), and I've decided to get a new one. A smartphone this time. I found this, a Land Rover A8 smartphone:

[I am not allowed to post a link. Ah, well -.-]

Waterproof, shockproof, sounds pretty awesome, but I also can't find any reviews for it that aren't more ads or company descriptions.

I'm very new to the smartphone world. Is Android 4.2 good or bad? Should I be considering some other OS?

Is 5MP for a camera good? How many mega-pixels should there be?

I'm also attempting to get a new service provider. Does anyone know anything about the cheaper options, such as Virgin Mobile, Page Plus, etc? Are these actually good competitors to the "Big 4" or are they just scams? I'm trying to pay as little per month as possible, darn college textbooks.

Lastly, I noticed some come with a bunch of 'add-on' options for SAM, SIM, and memory cards. Do the phones come with their own default cards or do I have to purchase them separately?

    Look forward to the responses,

    Cheers all,
