It just says 'unknown error' and no error code?

Awesome! Thanks so much! It is the original Samsung Galaxy S.

I tried to do this. KIEs is telling me that there is a firrmware update, however when I attempt to upgrade it I get a notification that it failed to run firmware upgrade and there is the an unknown error.

I assume you mean the i9000m ? The original Canadian Galaxy S Vibrant? The last official update for this phone was Android 2.3.3. If you want something newer you'll have to root and load a custom rom.

Getting Samsung Kies:

To get the latest version of Samsung Kies, visit the www.samsungapps.com and download Kies to a folder on your PC desktop.

Installing Samsung Kies:

1)	Open Samsung Kies folder on PC desktop and double click Kies icon to install program.

GT-I9000 Galaxy S Vibrant Software Upgrade Procedure:

1)	Run Samsung Kies program.
2)	Connect data cable to PC USB port.
3)	Power on device and connect to data cable.
4)	Wait for Samsung Kies to recognize the device.
5)	Samsung Kies will display pop-up window to alert if there is a software update available. Click to begin software upgrade process.
6)	Click
7)	Select information saving option.
8)	Click
9)	Select items to back up and click , or click to skip internal memory data backup.
10)	Firmware upgrade in process. Do not disconnect the cable from the PC.
11)	Firmware upgrade complete. Click From Android Upgrade Procedure

I have a Samsung Galaxy S19000M. I was wondering if someone could help with with updating the software/platform to a newer one.

I have downloaded Samsung KIEs and attempted to upgrade the firmware but it is not letting me. It is saying that it is unable to.

I am not tech savy at all so any help/advise would be appreciated!
