It has to do with names associated with your address book. I can simply say "I am home" in a message and it links it to my "Home" contact in my address book, because that is what I labeled it.

I think I figured it out. The chain link indicates there's something in your text message linked to a record in your phone. Example, I typed my sister's name in a text. Clicking on the link displayed her phone number in my list of contacts. When New Jersey was in a message, the system knew it to be a city and linked it to my calendar as a location option. The link is either tied to something you created or something that is prepopulated like the city NJ.

No that is not what it means because I get the chain link symbol on some of my msgs..a lot actually and theres no address or phone numbers in those msgs...just simply conversation

Why is the paper clip symbol by some messages and not others?

It's a normal link so that you can open and then view the details.
