Hi, just a question. I'm trying to set a custom mp3 as my mother's text message notification sound, but it's not coming up on the list of available sounds and I can't find a way to set it as that. She's got a Samsung Galaxy J1 - is it even possible to set a custom ringtone on this phone besides the built-in list it gives you?

    Thanks.

When i want to copy a file from pc to my phone, i receive this error:

cannot copy file: the device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected.

Not sure if it works on the Galaxy J1, but try opening "Contacts" and select the contact you want to customize. Tap to edit the contact's details, and there should be a drop-down menu to select a specific ringtone (or a Ringtone option per se).

Note that, in general, custom ringtones can't be assigned to contacts located on the SIM card or the phone's internal memory. They need to be Google contacts synced with your account etc.

    Cheers

Transfer Audio Files from a Windows PC:

    1. Connect the Samsung Galaxy J1 to your computer via USB
    2. Swipe the "Notifications" bar down
    3. Tap "Connected as a media device" > "Media device (MTP)"
    4. An AutoPlay window should appear on the PC. Click "Open device to view files using Windows Explorer"
    5. Open a second Windows Explorer window and locate the desired audio files on your computer
    6. Copy the files from your computer's HDD and into your phone's "Ringtones" and / or "Notifications" directories
    7. Once the transfer is done, safely disconnect your smartphone

Transfer Audio Files from a Mac:

NOTE: Skip the first 3 steps if Samsung Kies is already installed on your Mac.

    1. Launch the Internet browser on your Mac
    2. Visit Kies and click "Download for Mac OS"
    3. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Kies on your Mac
    4. Connect the Galaxy J1 to your computer via USB
    5. Swipe the "Notification" bar down and tap "Connect as a media device"
    6. Tap "Media device (MTP)"
    7. Launch Kies on the Mac and click the "Folder" icon next to "internal memory" or "External memory"
    8. In Kies, navigate to where you wish to transfer the audio files on your phone
    9. On the Mac use the file explorer to find the desired audio files
    10. Drag and drop the files in Kies to begin the transfer
    11. After the process is done, eject the phone's storage and safely disconnect your smartphone

    Set Custom Ringtones & Notifications

    Change the Phone's Ringtone:

    1. From the home screen, tap "Apps"
    2. Open "Settings" and go to "Sound"
    3. Swipe to "Ringtones and Notifications"
    4. Tap "Ringtones"
    5. Choose the ringtone you wish to assign and tap "OK"

    Change the Notifications Sound:

    1. Tap "Apps" from the home screen and go to "Settings"
    2. Access "Sound"
    3. Swipe to "Ringtones and Notifications"
    4. Tap "Notifications" and select the desired notification sound
    5. Tap "OK" to save the changes
