The Symbian OS is the operating system developed and sold by Symbian Ltd. The OS is used primarily by Nokia with its S60 user interface and by Sony Ericsson with its UIQ user interface, but the Symbian OS is also used by a number of Japanese mobile phone manufacturers for handsets sold inside of Japan.

Symbian OS is an open source operating system for mobile phones primarily used on Nokia advanced or data enabled smart phones. Symbian OS runs exclusively on ARM processors and has evolved from Psion's EPOC which was developed as a rudimentary operating system for early electronic organizers.

To make a long story short it seems as though Nokia's New CEO, Stephen Elop, has sacrificed Nokia and it's potential to put an open source smartphone on the market that would compete with the existing iphone/android (Google) Monopoly.

Symbian OS is used on Nokia 5800 on all Nokia smartphones, and smartphones many other manufacturers as Samsung, Sony Ericsson and LG. Symbian OS is open for third-party development by independent software vendors, corporate IT departments, network operators and Symbian OS licensees.

Thanks for responding. I was hoping it had java or symb so I could find a text reader application that would work on the phone. Surprisingly there isn't a simple text reader on it even though you can save notes. I want to be able to import text files and read them.

    I'll keep searching.

symbian seams to get lots of stick from people who dont have one or have never used one you find. It works great and alloys you to run things like tomtom from your phone. I love not having to carry a mp3 player, a phone, and tomtomt and a camera when my phone does a good job of the lot!
