Never going to happen ... It would be too much of a pain in the butt to try to get the two systems to work together, and too expensive to try to change all of the hardware for all of the towers (whether the comglomerate decided on Iden or CDMA) ... would be a lot cheaper and less of a pain to just wait for the other guy to go out of bussiness and then try pick up all thier customers

I heard the same thing a few times now over the past 5 years. I don't think it is true at all. Even though I heard it from a pretty high up Nextel figure. I think Verizon would out buy Nextel. They use the same technology and would/could seamlessly make it work and would benefit from the extra system capacity.

Nextel would have to upgrade everyone off of CDMA on Sprint and Nextel doesn't like giving anything away for free!!

    Ardy
can't be, nextel run on iden where as sprint runs on cdma technology. None of nextel phones are dual system except the old i2000 and the newer coming out soon i930 which are both iden/gsm anyways.
So probably a rumor or if true the 2 companies will run independently but under one umbrella.

I heard that Sprint and Nextel are in the process of merging. My aunt and cousin both have sprints with the walkie talkie features, however they can only walkie talkie other sprint members, not nextel members. Supposedly Sprint is running a test program with their phones now. What is goin on? Is it true???
