the midis arent illegal because they are made by different people on this and other sites. its not the artists work and it doesnt have the copyright thing like an MP3.

yea i figured it would be a copyright issue. just think about it for a second- where do most people get the mp3 to cut it for a ringtone? probably by downloading it. they're probably not gonna rip the song off the cd unless its quicker for them.

so obtaining it illegally, cutting it, and then sharing it with others... well its kinda like diggin yourself a deeper hole u know

as for all these paysites that charge like $2-3 for voicetones, i dont know how they havent been shut down. sharing artists' songs for free is already illegal (unless u have permission). selling a copy of it for profit is illegal. so you would think selling 30 second clips of songs would be just as or even more illegal.

i doubt the artists see a single penny from these sites that sell clips of their work. but the RIAA is too busy suing college students & teens (who already are low on cash anyways) rather than going after these big e-companies. they spend all that money and time investigating people when these paysites are right in front of their faces. just take a look http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&i...=mp3+ringtones

i think its fine if someone downloads a song, cuts it, puts it in the format they need, and sends it to their phone. what u do on your own computer and your phone is your business. the trouble starts when you start sharing it with others, whether it be free or for profit. what are the chances of this board being caught? i cant say. if it were my decision i would not put this site at risk by allowing them, cuz u never know.

but thats just me. i have no idea where the admin (tavenger5) stands on this issue

file size isnt all theyre worried about....alot of the songs have copyright protection or somethin like that...and they could get in trouble for having it on here..kinda like how u get in trouble for bootleggin cd's.

considering that most of the new phones use supertones, truetones, or whatever you want to call them (theyre all mp3s anyway) i really think the mods should look into it. perhaps have a file size limit for them so they dont blog down the server.

    just an idea...

I have currently got the "music" (meaning the words are included) ringtones for a number of songs and I did a search for them on this forum to see if they were already here and while there were hits for most of them, I'm not sure if they are the actual songs or just the poly or midi files. I ask because I don't know if the music ringtones constitute their own thread or not and I don't want to get flamed for making a new thread if it isn't needed. I also have been trying to figure out how they (Sony) gets the files so small because when I make my own music ringtones, they end up being huge....after a little messing around I see that the Sony tones are 24kbs but when I resample my own tones, the 24kbs won't play so I must be doing something wrong and I was hoping that if I posted the files on here for everyone to download, then perhaps someone could also tell me what settings are being used so that I can make my own ringtones, just as small.....So do they deserve their own thread or just post em in the current poly/midi download threads?
