T-mobile is upgrading their towers nationwide currently so you may suffer a little for a month or so but it will be worth it in the long run. The same is happening in Texas right now and although it's not the same I still have a decent signal, just give it a bit if it gets to bad call customer service and they'll most likely credit you some bonus minutes.

If your phones reception is not as good as it was then call Customer Care, they should be able to resolve your problem.
As for purchasing a phone overseas, I found that they are much more expensive there. In China there are no phone contracts like here in the US. You buy a phone usually for $300-$500 USD and then get a prepaid sim card. There are never dropped calls or bad reception in China. The selection of phones is mind boggling, I never saw so many phones. You do have to be sure the manual is in English or be able to read the foreign language it comes in.
BTW, the US gets phones about 1 year after it's be released elsewhere.
