I have an e715, and have had the greatest success using the Yamaha smaf software to convert wav to midi, then save it as mmf. Works perfectly well for wav/song files with words.

Mobiledit is a good choice of a file-to-phone transfer tool, it handleas a lot, backups, messages, pics and looks to much more sofisticated soon

Regular ringtones are in mmf format. For songs, it can be any format such as wav or mp3 or others. You have to convert those song files into mmf file before you can upload it to the phone. There are programs that allows you to do the conversion such as PSMPlayer and others. Check the following threads from Mobiledia for more details:

One limitation on converting songs to mmf is that the song has to be less than 10 seconds and the mmf file after conversion will be around 40K which is the maximum size of mmf that you can upload to the phone using data cable.
