Isn't this performed by changing the bandmap allocations in RSS? I didn't think there was an unlock needed as well. I'm pretty sure they use the same SIMs.

But why unlock a NEXTEL phone? As far as I know, you cannot use them on any other network otehr than nextel/iden right?

Unlocking of phones is required if you wish to switch your SIM to some other network while retaining your phone. Nokia phones are easiest, while LG, Moto are sometimes extremely difficult. If you are happy with your network, forget about unlocking. Also beware of various unlocking companies and individuals. It is difficult to find trustworthy ones. On ebay many times people sell locked phones by posting them unlock. You need a lot of luck if you intend to buy an "unlocked" phone from ebay.

What is "unlocking" a nextel phone? What is the advantage of it? Can someone please explain why I would want to unlock a phone? I see unlocked phones for sale all over ebay. Please help; thanks.
