The majority of my phones were purchased from ebay, some had problems, some didnt... watch out for the TMDA/CMDA phones, that's a risky area to wander into

I'm not really sure what Alltel's rates and coverage is like, but I know that Cingular is a bigger company with a large coverage area and their rates start at $39.99/mo. with Unl. Mobile to Mobile and 5000 Nights & Weekends, with No Roaming or Long Distance charges. You may also start your Nights at 7pm instead of 9pm for $7 more.

what can you recommend for a provider (from an unbiased perspective)? I've got it narrowed down to Alltel and Cingular for when we move to Little Rock, AR next month

No, of coarse not. I just work for a muti sub-dealer company which is allowed to sell more than one cellular service.

Chris, are T-Mobile, Sprint and Cingular all one company now?

I have purchased many phones off of Ebay and through my expirence you should never take the risk of purchasing a sprint phone. If there is a balance on the esn then you can't activate it, if it has been reported lost or stolen then you won't be able to activate it either. Also if it is a debranded phone you might not be able to activate that either. The easiest phones to purchase online I think are unlocked phones because you have the least amount of risks to take.

i spoke with a verizon rep last week and happened to mention i bought a battery and some chargers off of ebay. He warned me that I shouldn't advertise that information to anyone associated with Verizon as those items will void my warranty.
so they want me to spend $50 for a new battery

I have bought a few phone on ebay all have been fine especially to keep me out of the clutches of the contract renewal monkeys. As stated earlier you need to be wise check out who you deal with - pay via credit system (easier to get money back.
    My Ebay tips are:
    • Research what you want - especially do an advanced search and check the completed items box - this will make you see what similar items have sold for and help you to set a budget

    • Ask questions - it can be your protection; if they don't mention the fact that the item is not working and you aint asked it can be tricky ( If you don't see it mentioned don't ASSume ASK

    • Set your budget and stick to it - Don't keep checking whether you've won you will be overtaken by the bidding bug and pay more than it's worth

    • Be patient - there will be another one along in a minute (most items will come up again and often better

I have through the years bought (2) and sold (5) phones and LOTs of accessories on Ebay and have had no problems with any of them. Of course, that was before the GSM/Sim card era. Now they mostly are listed without a SIM card. You can get a virgin SIM card on Ebay but it's just another pain-in-the-ear to deal with. Unlocking seems to be another new issue.
