I went with a virgin fone to start with, I took the nokia 6015i which was the cheapest model and just went with it, the fone itself should cost you well under $100 and their $/minute rates are actually quite good, moreso if you're making a number of short calls per day. the fone itself is capable of games, ringtones and images but those are all optional and really if all you want to do is use it to talk to people then just dont bother with the options, they're so common now that you really wont save yourself any money by excluding them. the only thing aboug Virgin Mobile that I'm not sure about is whether or not it covers your area. I hope this helps.

pay as you go has the chance to be cheaper/month but then if you're doing more talking then it picks up in price much more quickly than contracts. So in my mind wheter you want pay as you go or plan depends on how much talking you're going to be doing. is there anymore info on the expected usage the fone will be getting?

With that in mind I'm trying to find the most rudimentary phone possible. Believe it or not, I only want to use it to talk to people! I don't want games, or text messaging, or calculators, or built in flashlights, or fruity ring tones, or any of that garbage. I just want a phone if you will... (no stupid flip screens either)

WHY IS THIS SO HARD TO FIND? The only feature I am mildy interested in is having a personal phone book...

Well, analog has long since gone by the wayside. You're complaining about expense, and analog is MORE expensive than digital. You're not likely going to find an analog only phone anyway. From what you're describing you want, it sounds to me like you might want a pay as you go setup. You buy an incredibly low budget phone, it will come with X number of minutes, then when you're out of minutes, you buy more minutes. T-mobile has a good pay as you go setup where you can get 30 min for $10. That's about 3 cents/minute, with no hidden connect fees. They also have $20, $50, $100 cards that have more minutes. The problem with pay as you go is that you have to use the minutes within a certain amount of time (30 - 90 days) or the minutes expire. The most basic monthly plans start at around $20/month, so maybe you want to might want to consider a rate plan. Most carriers have a "free" phone available with most rate plans too. So, since you don't want the bells and whistles, just a basic phone, you should be able to get one for free with a one year contract. Even the free phones will have basic digital features like text messaging. So, even though you don't want it, you're going to be hard pressed to find one without it. Just because you have a feature on your phone doesn't mean you have to use it. Even though there are like minded people, you're in an extreme minority. The market is driven by adding features, not excluding them. Today's top of the line phones have hundreds of megs of memory, take pictures and video, send and receive SMS, MMS and email, have a java virtual machine that runs java apps and games, receive streaming video, and have GPS. The technology is expanding so rapidly, the manufacturers are rushing to add still more functionality to the device. The general public has a seemingly endless desire to soak up this new functionality.

But anyway, back to your needs, I would recomend a monthly rate plan over pay as you go. Just get the "free" phone with the cheapest rate plan, and ignore any feature you don't want to use (like games or text messaging). You can use the simple, built in ringtones, and ignore any features you don't need. If you're that hard pressed for a cell phone without ringtones and text messaging, you're gonna need a time machine to get back to 1980. But then, you're looking at 35-50 cents per minute.... (doh!)

Wow, I didn't think it was possible! lol

I'm in Easthampton, MA (01027) We have pretty much everything around here in terms of providers. The only problem is that, as you know, most cells now are digital. Round here (western MA) there's a lot of boonie places you can go so I'd maybe want an analog? It would also sweeten the deal if I could get one of those pay by the second deals. Realistically, this phone would be used for just quick little things and an occasional like 15-20 minute max convo.

I'm just too picky... I want things like low (can't remember exactly what it was) absortion radiation numbers... for some reason SR comes to mind... not spend $50.00 a month, no huge hidden fees, no crazy long term contracts with ridiculous termination fees... I'm impossible!

You aren't alone. There are a lot of people who are of like mind.

Can you please tell us what provider is in your area? Or what is the best provider in your area? If you don't know, please tell us where you live, and one of us will then tell you what's the best provider in you area, and then in turn, provide you with the best information on what phone to get.
