"best" is highly dependent on what you want in an suv.. some people would say that the car-based suv's dont even count... others drastically prefer them
if all you're asking about is the gas mileage, check a site like www.edmunds.com

Me and my wife are looking at the new Range Rover Sport. A few others that we have testdriven: Porsche Cayenne S (nice but don't like the looks inside), MB M class (ML55), and BMW X5 4.8is. Out of all of those, I was most impressed with the new Range Rover. I'm not sure on the quality as of yet but from what I hear, it is getting better. As for gas mileage, not too many SUVs will get great gas mileage. If you looking for gas mileage, look at the Lexus 400h hybrid. I also hear that some of the new GM SUVs will also start to get better gas mileage.

    Hope this helps,

I cannot attest to gas mileage, but I CAN tell you that my Explorer kicks butt when it comes to driving and handling as compared to the others in its class... I've driven the Chevy Trailblazer, jeep grand Cherokee and hubby drove the new dodge whateverthingy... the Explorer is the smoothest most "car like" of the bunch
