If you find that Cingular won't unlock your phone, you can try going to an independent cellular dealer and probably pay them to do it for a small fee. The main reason a service provider won't unlock a phone is they'd rather sell you a new one unless you have a good excuse why you need it unlocked.

MY MISTAKE! New 64k SIMs will work in MOST older phones, but you will not be able to enjoy any of the features of an Enhanced Network Selection (ENS) handset. Any new phone you buy from Cingular will be ENS capable but it must be new. You cannot tell if a phone is ENS capable until you talk to technical support and they input your IMEI number into their system.

First of all, if you put a Cingular SIM into an AT&T phone, the phone is going to lock and you'll have to call Cingular to unlock it (should be no problem since they bought out AT&T Wireless). Then, you'll have to reconfigure your voicemail, text, and web browser by going HERE. Otherwise, you should have no problems as long as the phone supports the same size SIM as what you're putting into it. Old SIM cards were 32K in size now they are 64K, and the older phones cannot use the newer SIMs, so make sure your SIM is supported by your phone.

I don't think Siemens made any phones that were non-GSM. So your SL56 will take a SIM card. Will it take a Cingular SIM? No. You have to get it unlocked and Cingular won't help you.
