I guess then the only way to connect to the phone without paying 50 bucks is IRDA then huh?

I have exactly the same report. I bought a non-oem CA-42 on ebay for my Nokia 6102i cell. First the phone acknowledges a cable has been plugged in, but then says "enhancement not supported". Nokia politely laughed at me when I told them the truth, and said the cable would never work, to go buy theirs at $49.95. I see ebay is flooded with these non-oem cables, all selling for less than the cost of shipment. Hard to believe someone would set up production to make thousands of off spec cables that would never work. I tend to believe that whoever is making these non-oem cables had to have done their homework at some point in time, but our experience is negative so far. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has had good luck, because I'm here to tell you Nokia's $50 price tag is offensive.
