"Unlocking" a phone simply means enabling the phone to access any network you want it to. Most phones will normally come "locked" - which means you can only use the SIM card supplied, or another one on the same network. When you unlock the phone, you can put any SIM card you want in the phone, be it O2, T-mobile etc...

The way to tell if your phone is locked is to simply insert a different SIM card on a different network into the handset. If it comes up with a message similar to "access denied" or "SIM not accepted", then your phone is probably locked.

You can usually get your phone unlocked from your local phone store for a fee of about £10 (that's how much I paid). Your network would be only too happy to do this for you, so long as you give them the £25 they ask for!

Unless you're wanting to swich a network, unlocking really isn't that neccessary. However it does slightly increase the value of the phone by about £10 -20.
