I just learned a few days ago the correct way to change file extensions so I thought I'd share this info here. I read somewhere on the internet that you only had to right-click the "rename" of any music file and just change the extension to whichever you wanted. This is true only if your files show the extensions. My files did not show the extension so when I tried this....the file not only added the new extension but kept the original as well. Example: tabledance.mp3 would be tabledance.mp3.mid, if I just right-clicked and renamed the music file. I'm using Windows Vista and I think Windows XP uses this same method that I'm gonna explain below. To change file extensions:

    1. Locate the folder that holds your music/ringtones files and open that folder.

    2. Click on the "Organize" Tab

    3. Scroll down to the "Folder and Search Options" and click on it to open.

    4. Click on the "View Tab" to open it. Now you will see a list of checked and unchecked items below "advanced settings", under "Files and Folders". Locate the "Hide File Extension for known file types" and UNCHECK that box. Click on "Apply" and "Ok".

    5. Now all of your files should be showing the files extention. You can now right-click on any file and change the file extension to whatever you need to by deleting the current extension and replacing it with one you want. Please note: Explorer will always ask are you sure you want to change the file extension and just say "yes". One last thing....I did notice that any file I play with file extension .mid will open in Realplayer but not Windows Media player so you may have to have music player software compatible with the files extension. Hope this helps as it sure worked for me!
