    Calls are not placed using a data network at all.

    EDGE is data and so is HSDPA.

    I believe that calls are placed through the voice network which is GPRS.

    I could completely be blowing it here though and be completely incorrect, since I almost never use a GSM provider due to lack of coverage domestically.
