    I've had the same problem- tried a few different brightness apps.... have not found one that works for me real well yet. Probably the best i've found so far is the stupid settings widget preinstalled on the phone. No good for checking incoming calls (as you can't get to it when the phone is ringing) but functional in most other situations.
