With Sprint and Verizon Wireless its a little different than AT&T since they don't use Sim cards. You definitely have the right idea of checking to make sure it has a good ESN before you buy it. Typically changing phones is very simple once you get your new phone. All you need to do is either call the carrier and give them the ESN or you can normally log into your account online and make the change yourself.

As for the old phones that are broken I would recommend not throwing them away since batteries produce toxic waste, even mercury. You can send them to a cell phone recycler such as Restore Wireless - We Buy Your Used Cell Phones! – Cell Phone Recycling and they safely recycle your old phones and will reimburse you for shipping. I work for Restore Wireless - We Buy Your Used Cell Phones! – Cell Phone Recycling and they are great with their customers, they will also buy back your used and unwanted cell phones that are in working condition and pay you within 15 business days of receiving the phones. Check out their price list on their website, or send them a message with the phones you want to sell.

    I hope that was helpful.

Have a family plan with at&t, is using 2 different smart phones, a new unlocked nokia E71 and a used iphone 3gs i bought on ebay.
Was up for upgrade, got a iphone 4g i sold on ebay $855., bought the 2 phones for $220. each.
Is sync them on google. Just move simcard between the phones, no problems.
