I had done a comparison between the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One a while ago and the HTC One managed to put up quite a decent fight. But what about comparing two other smart phones from these manufacturers? Both these smart phones are clearly competing directly with each other. Even their names are similar. Here, I will be comparing the HTC One mini with the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini. Do you think the “mini” relates just to the reduced size of the smart phones or are others features downgraded as well? Read on to find out...

    Size and weight

Considering both these smart phones are supposed to be “mini” versions of the HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC didn’t really grasp the concept too well. The HTC One mini measures 132 x 63.2 x 9.25 mm which isn’t too much smaller, even when compared with the HTC One. The Galaxy S4 mini, on the other hand, is much smaller at 124.6 x 61.3 x 8.94 mm. One thing I can’t really understand though is why both these smart phones are so thick? In terms of weight, the HTC One mini weighs 122 g while the Galaxy S4 mini weighs 107 g.

Since both these smart phones are primarily supposed to be portable, I guess this point goes to Samsung.

    Display

In term of display, the HTC One mini does a lot better as compared to the Galaxy S4 mini. The HTC One mini comes with a 4.3” Super LCD-2 screen while the Galaxy S4 mini comes with a 4.3” Super AMOLED screen. The Galaxy S4 mini has a pixel density of just 256 ppi which is shockingly low. The HTC One mini though has a pixel density of 341 ppi which is quite impressive considering Samsung could just muster up a lousy 256 ppi. This means that the HTC One mini can provide you with much better picture quality as compared with the Galaxy S4 mini.

With almost a 100 ppi difference between the two, the point goes to the HTC One mini.

    Memory & Storage

When it comes to memory, the Galaxy S4 mini offers 1.5 GB of RAM while the HTC One mini offers 1 GB of RAM although I don’t expect too noticeable a difference in speed between the two smart phones. But when it comes to storage, it’s a whole different story. The Galaxy S4 mini offers just 5 GB of inbuilt user storage though it does offer expandable memory options up to 64 GB as opposed to the HTC One mini which, while it has a higher user memory at 11 GB, has no memory expansion capabilities. I must say, there isn’t much you can do with a smart phone that just allows for 11 GB of storage.

It is because of the poor storage options that this point goes to the Galaxy S4 mini.

    Camera

This was one point where the Galaxy S4 simply blew the HTC One away and things don’t look like they are going to change here either. The Galaxy S4 mini has a wonderful 8 MP camera on the back and a handy 1.9 MP camera on the front while the HTC One mini has just a 4 MP camera on the back and a 1.6 MP camera on the front. Both smart phones support HD recording at 1080p and if it is of any consequence, the HTC One mini also supports video recording at 720p through its front camera.

I must say, with the technology in the market today, you can’t expect to win this point or even come close with a 4 MP camera. The point goes to Samsung.

    OS & Performance

Both these smart phones are running on the latest Android operating system 4.2.2 (JellyBean). But while the Galaxy S4 mini uses the TouchWiz Nature UX 2.0 user interface, the HTC One mini uses HTC’s Sense user interface. What does this mean? It means both smart phones are pretty much a different version of the same thing. In terms of performance the Galaxy S4 mini comes with a Dual core, 1700 MHz, Krait 300 processor which can easily handle multiple apps at the same time. The HTC One mini comes with a Dual core, 1400 MHz, Krait processor which may just be a little slower than the Galaxy S4 mini although the difference is barely noticeable. Both smart phones have the same Adreno 305 graphics processor and run on Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chips.

It would be unfair to award this point to either manufacturer. Let’s call it a draw.

    Battery

Both of these smart phone manufacturers are known to do quite well when it comes to battery life. And while there is no information currently available regarding the battery life provided by the 1,900 mAh battery on the Galaxy S4 mini, I’m sure it will do just as well if not better than the 1,800 mAh battery on the HTC One mini which provides a stand by time of close to 21 days. What more could you ask for as far as the battery of a smart phone is concerned? There really isn’t much to complain about either of these smart phones in terms of battery life.

Again, it would be unfair to award this point to either manufacturer. Another draw.

    Price

The Galaxy S4 mini is currently being sold without contract for around $ 550. That is a little steep considering the Galaxy S4 is just a $ 100 more expensive. Even though there isn’t any official announcement from HTC regarding the price of the HTC One mini in the United States, it is going to be released in August 2013 in the United Kingdom for around £ 380. What does that mean for U.S. markets? If rumours are to be believed, it will probably cost around $ 550 as well.

I guess this point will have to be a draw as well since I don’t really know how much the HTC One mini is going to cost.

    Conclusion

With the score at 1 point to 3 I guess Samsung has finally managed to make up for the humiliation it suffered when the Galaxy S4 was being compared to the HTC One. Everything seems to be back to normal in the smart phone world.
