The battery is one of the most important components in your smartphone, for the sole reason that it keeps everything going. Nothing else is more frustrating than your smartphone shutting down before you got the chance to plug it in and recharge it. With the Nexus 5's battery life of just "average" (according to reviews), conserving battery life is something that every Nexus 5 owner should consider.

Below you will find a handful of simple tips and tricks that can have a tremendous positive impact on your handset's battery.

Reducing Screen Brightness and Screen Timeout:

    1. From the home screen, tap the "All apps" icon
    2. Tap "Settings"
    3. Under "Device", tap "Display"
    4. Tap "Brightness"
    5. Tap the "AUTO" button to disable automatic brightness, and drag the brightness slider to a lower (yet still comfortable / readable) level
    6. Tap "Sleep"
    7. Select a lower timeout value, and tap the "Home" key to return to the home screen

Changing From a Live Wallpaper to a Static One:

Live wallpapers can have a pretty big impact on battery life, so it's highly recommended that you use a static wallpaper (photo) instead. To do so:

    1. Tap and hold an empty area on one of your home screens
    2. Tap "Wallpapers"
    3. Browse through your wallpapers, and once you've found the desired one, tap the "Set Wallpaper" button located in the top-left corner of the screen

Disabling Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Hotspot When Not in Use:

When not in use, it's always a good idea to disable Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Hotspot, in order to increase battery life. To do so:

    1. Tap the "All apps" icon while viewing a home screen
    2. Tap "Settings"
    3. If the switches associated with "Wi-Fi" and "Bluetooth" are set to "ON", tap them to set them to "OFF" and disable these features
    4. Tap "More" > "Tethering & portable hotspot"
    5. If the check box associated with "Portable Wi-Fi hotspot" is marked, tap it to uncheck it and disable hotspot

Disabling GPS When Not in Use:

GPS can be a massive battery drainer, so unless you use it, you are strongly advised to disable this feature.

    1. Tap "All apps" while on the home screen, and open "Settings"
    2. Under "Personal", tap "Location"
    3. If the "Location" slider located at the top of the screen is set to "ON", tap it and set it to "OFF".

NOTE: you can tap "Mode" and change or disable individual location settings. (GPS needs to be enabled to access this menu)

Stopping Unnecessary Running Services and Apps:

You can save battery life by stopping unused services and apps. To do so:

    1. Access the "Settings" menu
    2. Under "Device", tap "Apps"
    3. Swipe from right to left and access the "Running" tab
    4. Select a service or application that you wish to stop
    5. Tap "Stop" and "OK" to stop a service or application

NOTE: stopping certain services can have a negative effect on the behavior of your smartphone. Disable only apps and services that you are familiar with, and that are not used by the system itself.

Disabling Vibration Notifications and Haptic Feedback:

    1. Access the "Settings" menu
    2. Scroll down to "Device", and tap "Sound"
    3. Tap the check box associated with "Vibrate when ringing" to disable this feature
    4. To disable haptic feedback, scroll down and unmark the "vibrate on touch" check box. This will prevent your smartphone to vibrate when tapping the navigation buttons or the display

    Changing Sync Settings:

You can conserve battery life by changing the sync settings for your accounts, so that they download or sync less information, or less frequently. To do so:

    1. Tap "All apps" on the home screen and tap "Settings"
    2. Under "Accounts", tap the desired account type (we'll use "Google" as an example)
    3. Select the desired account
    4. Unmark the check boxes associated with the apps / services that you wish to stop syncing
