Android 4.4 KitKat has been released recently, and although the Samsung Galaxy S4 is among the smartphones expected to receive the update sooner rather than later, so far only a handful of devices (mostly Nexus gadgets) have been updated to Android 4.4 KitKat.

Fortunately, you can take advantage of the latest Android OS on the Galaxy S4 LTE I9505 with the use of a custom ROM created by Team Gummy. The ROM is based on AOSP Android 4.4.

IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ BEFORE PROCEEDING

    • This is a custom ROM based on Android 4.4. However it's still in the testing phase and although there haven't been any major bugs reported by users, you may still encounter certain issues
    • IMPORTANT – this is a ROM in its testing phase, and it's missing ART support
    • DO NOT use this guide for other smartphones or SGS4 variants aside from I9505. To make sure that you have the right model, go to "Settings" > "About Device"
    • Your smartphone needs to be rooted and run the latest ClockWorkMod Recovery image
    • During the tutorial, you will need to factory reset your smartphone. Do not skip this step!
    • You can backup app data using the "Helium" tool from the Google Play Store
    • Backup your APN Internet Settings
    • If you wish to be secure and return to your current ROM after installing the Gummy ROM, you will create a NANDROID Backup
    • You should backup your contacts before proceeding (you'll find a guide below)
    • You need to enable USB Debugging before proceeding. To do so, go to "Settings" > "About device" and tap "Build Number" several times until you get the message "Developer options has been enabled" on your screen. Then, go back to "Settings" and you will see a new menu called "Developer options". Tap it and enable "USB Debugging"
    • Make sure your smartphone's battery is at least at 60-70% before proceeding. It is very important that your smartphone does not run out of battery during the installation process
    • This is an advanced guide and certain issues may occur. If you brick / damage your phone, you can't hold the developers or anyone else responsible

Optional – Backing Up Your Contacts:

First, your contacts should be linked with your Gmail Account:

    1. Open the "Contacts" app
    2. Press "Menu" and select "Merge with Google", then confirm

To sync your contacts with the Google account:

    1. Make sure that "Gmail" is installed
    2. Open the "all apps" menu and go to "Settings" > "Accounts and Sync"
    3. Enable the Accounts and syncing service
    4. Choose the Google account from the accounts setup
    5. Make sure that "Sync Contacts" is enabled
    6. Tap "Sync now" and allow your phone to sync with your Gmail account
    7. Open "Gmail" on your computer and click the "Gmail" drop-down menu located in the top-left corner of the screen (below "Google")
    8. Select "Contacts" and check whether or not all your contacts have been stored

Booting the Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE I9505 in Recovery Mode:

IMPORTANT – You don't need to follow this guide right now. This is a step-by-step tutorial that will allow you to reboot your device in recovery mode at a later time during the installation process. Refer to this guide when directed to do so.

    1. Power off your device
    2. Press and hold the "Volume Up", "Power" and "Home" buttons at the same time
    3. Once the screen flickers or the CWM Recovery logo appears, release the buttons. (Remember, for this guide to work, you need to have CWM installed)
    4. After releasing the buttons, you should see the main "Recovery Mode" menu

Flashing the Android 4.4 KitKat Gummy Custom ROM on the Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE I9505:

This is the actual flashing guide for the Gummy ROM. Read carefully and don't miss any steps.

    1. Download the ROM by visiting this link
    2. The ROM does not include Google apps, so you will need to download the Gapps package by visiting this link
    3. Place both zip files in a folder, but don't unzip the archives
    4. Connect your smartphone to your computer using the USB cable
    5. Copy both zip files downloaded at step 1 and 2, and paste them onto your phone's internal storage
    6. Turn off your SGS4
    7. Boot in CWM Recovery Mode (refer to the guide above to learn how)
    8. Create a fully NANDROID Backup of the current ROM. To do so, select "backup and restore", and save the file on the internal storage. Don't skip this step
    9. Now, factory reset your device by selecting "wipe data / factory reset", and confirm
    10. Flash the Gummy Android 4.4 ROM. Select "Install zip from sdcard", browse for the ROM zip file and confirm
    11. After the ROM has been flashed, repeat the previous step (install zip from sdcard) but this time, browse and select the Google Apps zip instead
    12. After the process is complete, return to the CWM Recovery screen and reboot your device. NOTE: the first reboot after applying the ROM might take several minutes. Don't panic, and don't press any buttons. If the process takes longer than 5 minutes, repeat the guide and make sure that you don't skip any steps
    13. Now, enter your Google Account details to restore your contacts and other settings
    14. Congratulations! You can now test / enjoy the Android 4.4 KitKat Gummy custom ROM

In case you don't wish to stick with the Android 4.4 KitKat Gummy ROM, use the previously created NANDROID Backup to restore your previous ROM.

If you have any questions about this testing / beta ROM, visit the official thread over at XDA-developers.
