Samsung has recently released the official Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update on the European Galaxy S3, but as usual, these types of OTA (over the air) releases can take a while before they reach every device out there. In other words, the update is being launched in waves, and if you're not among the lucky ones, then you might have to wait a bit while longer before you'll be able to enjoy this latest release. Or not!

The good news is that you can apply the latest update manually. This guide will allow you to install the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean OS (firmware XXUGMK6) on your Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300. This is not a custom ROM. It's an official Samsung release, and you can use Odin to load it manually on your device. You do not need to own a rooted smartphone for this, but if you do apply this guide on a rooted handset, you will lose root and the bootloader will be locked once more.

    IMPORTANT – READ BEFORE PROCEEDING:

    • This guide is meant only for the Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300. Do not attempt to apply this guide to any other devices or Galaxy S3 variants. Yes, although this is an official release from Samsung, the update only works on the I9300
    • In order to complete this guide, you will make use of Odin
    • You will need access to a Windows machine
    • On your computer, it's recommended that you disable any security tools (antivirus, firewall etc.) in order to prevent these programs to interfere with the updating process. (They might pick up false positives)
    • It's very important that your smartphone does not remain out of battery during the installation process. As such, make sure that the battery is at least 60-70% full before proceeding
    • You should enable USB Debugging before starting the installation process. To do so, go to "Settings" > "About device" > tap the "Build number" field until the "Developer options" menu is visible. Then, go back to "Settings" > "Developer options" and enable "USB Debugging"
    • IMPORTANT: While this is an official update, using Odin may result in loss of personal data. As such, it's highly recommended that you create backups before proceeding. Make sure you backup your contacts, text messages, apps, call logs and also, the EFS folder
    • This is an official Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update. In case you want to try out an unofficial Android 4.4 KitKat release, you can check out this link for instructions on how to flash CM 11 nightlies.
    • This is an advanced guide. You can't hold Samsung or anyone else responsible, in case something goes wrong and you brick / damage your phone, or if you lose important data

Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300: Install Official Android 4.3 Jelly Bean (XXUGMK6):

    1. Download the required Android 4.3 firmware by visiting this link
    2. Save the file on your computer, and unzip it on your desktop
    3. Download the "Odin" tool, unzip it and install it on your computer
    4. Install the latest Samsung Galaxy S3 drivers on your computer, if necessary. You can use Samsung KIES to install the drivers automatically
    5. Launch Odin on your computer
    6. Restart your Galaxy S3 in download mode. To do so, first turn off your smartphone. Then, press and hold the "Power", "Volume Down" and "Home" buttons at the same time
    7. After you've rebooted your SGS3 in download mode, and after you've launched Odin on your computer, connect the smartphone to your PC using the USB cable
    8. Odin will now need to recognize your smartphone. If it does, then the "Added" message should be shown, and the "ID:COM" section should be yellow or blue. If this is not the case, then disconnect your SGS3, and reinstall the Galaxy S3 drivers, after which you'll need to start over
    9. In Odin, select "PDA" and select the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean file
    10. Now press the "Start" button in Odin
    11. Once the flashing process is complete, Odin should show the "Pass" message, and the "ID:COM" section should turn green
    12. You can now safely disconnect your device from your computer, and reboot it. NOTE: this process may take a while, so be patient and don't press any buttons
    13. Congratulations!

    KNOWN ISSUES:

    • In certain situations, the Galaxy S3 might not complete the final reboot. If this happens, then you could try and reboot in recovery mode (turn off your device and press and hold the "Volume Down", "Power" and "Home" buttons simultaneously), and then perform a full wipe (select "wipe data factory reset" and "wipe cache partition"). Then, select "reboot system now"
    • Rarely, Odin might get stuck and it could prevent you from finishing the guide. If this happens, close the program, unplug your smartphone from your computer, reinstall the drivers, force restart your Galaxy SIII and start the guide over from the top.
