Never mind, problem solved; I think simply restarting the phone did it. I can now listen to my music files with the earbuds on and the sound is actually pretty awesome. I can now see the little icon at top of screen that indicates the headset is plugged in, whereas before there was nothing there. There's still the issue about the battery, but if the problem persists I can just get a replacement.

I'm new to smartphones (and tech challenged, I might add, so bear with me) and currently frustrated with these problems on my unlocked (I use it with T-Mobile) HTC Vivid: the FM radio comes through just fine on the earbuds that came with the phone, but when I try to play music from my MP3 files, the sound only comes through the phone's speakers, even though the headset is plugged in. I can control the playlist with the "+" and "-" buttons on the headset, but there's no sound from earbuds when I'm using the MP3. Am I missing something here, or is it a defect? I've tried different headsets, all with the same result.

Also frustrating me is the battery life. I have only the most basic apps running, screen brightness is dimmed, wi-fi is off, I have my e-mail accounts set up so that I can only manually update, and really don't even use the internet. But this morning, for example, after fully charging it, it was down to 86% one hour later. The only thing I had used it for was two text messages (one sent, one received).

Did I just get a lemon phone? I bought it online unlocked almost a month ago and my time to return it is running out. I blame myself for not checking all features (like MP3) until now and as for the battery, I don't think it was this bad at the beginning, so I just thought, if I just tweak this and that, it should last longer, but obviously it seems to be getting worse. If it weren't for the screen size and the 8mp camera, I'd be running back to my "dumb phone" right now (I just might).
