WARNING! When factory resetting a smartphone, all your data stored on the device’s internal memory will be deleted. This includes media files, downloads, contacts and more. Furthermore, all settings will be restored to factory values.

NOTE: Before you reset the phone you can check this thread for instructions on backing up data on the device, and this thread for restoring data.

    Factory Reset via Settings:

    1. Open “Settings’
    2. Go to “Backup & reset”
    3. Optionally you can enable “Back up my data” and “Restore”
    4. Tap “Factory data reset”
    5. Tap “Reset device” and if necessary, enter your lock screen password/PIN
    6. When ready, tap “Delete” > “Reset device”

    Factory Reset via Recovery:

NOTE: If your phone crashes, freezes, runs out of storage inexplicably or otherwise it’s preventing you from applying the reset using the method above, alternatively you can try resetting the phone from the Recovery menu.

    1. With the phone turned off, press and hold “Power”, “Home” and “Volume Up” simultaneously
    2. At the “Samsung" logo, release “Power”
    3. When the Android appears on the screen release “Volume UP” and “Home” as well
    4. Once in Recovery, navigate the menu by pressing “Volume down”
    5. Highlight “Wipe data / factory reset” and press “Power”
    6. Press “Volume down” to highlight “yes – delete all user data”
    7. Press “Power” to confirm

    Update the OS:

NOTE: Once you factory reset the phone it’s recommended to check if new updates are available for download.

    1. Launch “Settings”
    2. Go to “About device”
    3. Check if a new update is available
    4. If applicable, follow the on-screen prompts to complete the process (NOTE: the update will require at least one reboot)
