I have the Blackberry 7520 and will be traveling to Germany in Feb. I am thinking my best option is to just get the V180 international phone and use phone only service while I am there, which I am fine with. My two questions are:
    1) will my blackbery sim work in the V180?
    2) can I purchase one of these phones off of Ebay or do I have to get it directly from nextel?

Roaming rates in Germany are $1.29 a min. http://www.nextel.com/en/services/wo...verage.shtml#g

I know a few customers that go over seas often.. If you are planning on using the phone for sometime over there $1.29 a min is expensive. A German prepaid phone is much cheaper and most of the time they give you unlimited incoming calls free and even after your mins run out they keep it going for a year. If you do get an unlocked quad band gsm phone. You could use your nextel sim or a prepaid sim in it. the advantage of your nextel sim is that people in the states just dial you like always and it rings over there. The prepaid idea will give you a German number. There is great phone card options for people in the states to call Germany like tel3.com $.04 to $.25 a min with no pin needed.

The v180 from nextel is not unlocked meaning you can only put in your Nextel sim. It is $74.99 brand new. No Nextel stores will have it in stock it has to be shipped to you (extra $). They treat it as an accessory and most of the time can be put on your bill.

The new i930 is gsm/iden and will do international. If you do take your nextel sim over seas make sure you call and add international roaming, international voicemail, and international dialing on. Then wait a day and call back to add it on again. It only gets done right the 1st time about 75% of the time.
the international number to call for customer care when you are over seas is 360-662-5202. ps remember to hold the 0 button down until you get the + before dialing.

great info, thanks for the help. I will only be there for 5 days so I am not looking to spend a great deal of money on a phone. My service plan is through work and my calls will only be for work purposes as most of my family will be there with me (wedding). I am not that worried about the per min price as all of the calls will be work related and paid for by work. I will most likely not need to use it again as I do not do much international travel.

You are saying that if I get an unlocked V180 it will work fine. i saw them for like $30 unlocked so that may be my best approach.

    thanks for the help.

yes make sure it is quad band.. The v180 comes in many freq choices. It should do 900mhz & 1800mz for over seas usage. 800/850 and 1900 are usa bands.

you can rent one also but by the time you are done you would be way above the $30. it is $8 a day Each Cellhire rental comes with:
    International phone and/or BlackBerry®
Complete accessory pack including easy-to-read, easy-to-carry instruction booklet, two batteries, rapid charger, in-vehicle charger and travel adapter for foreign outlets
    Pre-paid return packing envelope
24-hour customer support by calling 1-800-753-8315
