Info: The Nokia Lumia 928 vs The Apple iPhone 5. Can You Really Go Wrong With Either?

We saw the Nokia Lumia 928 try to overthrow the Samsung Galaxy S4 and fail miserably. But does that mean it is a bad phone? Not really. Here we will compare the Nokia Lumia 928 with another leading smartphone, the Apple iPhone 5. Will it do better this time around? Or is it just another so-so smartphone? Read on to find out.

• Size and weight - There is really no comparison here. We all know that Apple has understood this category perfectly. They have managed to fit so much into a smartphone without making it too bulky and this is something we really have to thank the late Steve Jobs for. The iPhone 5 measures 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm which is truly amazing considering all of its features and hardware. On the other hand, Nokia really hasn’t done much to reduce the dimensions of its flagship phone. It measures a whopping 133 x 68.9 x 10.1 mm which makes it one of the biggest high-end smartphones around today. We can also see the difference when we compare the weight of both these smartphones. The iPhone 5 weighs just 112 grams which is 50 grams lighter than the Lumia 928. A lot more work to do huh Nokia?
  
• Display - I really want to give this point to Nokia but then this wouldn’t be an honest comparison would it? The IPS LCD technology on the iPhone 5 is a great display and it has a pixel density of 326. The Lumia 928 has an AMOLED screen with a pixel density of 332. Don’t get me wrong. The Lumia 928 doesn’t come in second here. It just seems unfair to put it on top. Let’s call this one a tie.
  
• Memory & Storage - If you actually want to compare the memory on both these phones, you won’t really find much of a difference. Both have 1 GB of RAM and in terms of performance there isn’t much to differentiate between them. But, Apple has launched the iPhone 5 with an internal memory of either 16, 32 or 64 GB in the United States which means that the Lumia 928 looks rather weak with just a 32 GB internal memory option. In truth, I can’t really think of storing so much data on my smartphone. Honestly, I wouldn’t even feel it is safe to do so. But, considering there are 64 GB versions of smartphones like the Galaxy S4 which also accommodate additional expandable memory I’m guessing there are some people that love storing data on their smartphones.
  
• Camera - There was a detailed camera comparison done between the iPhone 5, the Nokia Lumia 920 and some other smartphones about a week ago. The verdict was that the Lumia 920 wasn’t that great even though it had OIS (Optical Image Stabilization). The Lumia 928 did manage to improve on this with its Xenon flash and even though both these phones have excellent photography capabilities we will give this point to the Lumia 928 just because of its xenon flash and excellent low light capability.
  
• OS & Performance - Both the Windows Phone 8 and iOS 6 are excellent operating systems in their own right. The live tiles on Windows are great and the iOS 6 has Siri. You can’t really compare two operating systems which work so differently. Both are great in their own way. There is very little difference between both the phones in terms of performance as well. Even though there have been reports of decreased battery life and signal strength with the latest iOS update both phones still handle extremely well. I would call it a tie.
  
• Battery - Nokia has really come a long way with its battery since the Lumia 800. You couldn’t even expect to go through the day with the Lumia 800 but the Lumia 928; with its 2000 mAh battery does an excellent and can even last a day with moderate to heavy use. While not quite as good as Samsung they certainly have improved. Unfortunately for Apple though, being a lighter smartphone does have its disadvantages. The smaller 1440 mAh battery means you can’t expect too much out of it. I can’t believe it, Nokia takes this point.
  
• Price - An unlocked Apple iPhone 5 is priced around $ 200 on contract which is a lot considering you can get a Nokia Lumia 928 on contract for just $ 49.90. There really is no way I can give this point to Apple. In terms of pricing, Nokia really hit the nail on the head with the Lumia 928.

Conclusion

Nokia could have released the Lumia 928 on a few more cell phone service providers though which is a major disappointment. But, if you are happy using Verizon there is no other reason to not get a Lumia 928. All those features for just $ 49.99 is truly amazing. Hardcore Apple supporters may still prefer the iPhone 5 even though it costs $ 150 more. But, if we compare all the above points, the score stands at 3-1 to Nokia. But, don’t let this sway you. At the end of the day, no matter which of these smartphones you choose, there is absolutely no reason to feel you have made the wrong choice.
