The Nokia Lumia 928 is quite a handy little smart phone isn’t it? Unfortunately, it didn’t have too much time to shine since the Nokia Lumia 1020 was launched soon after. Still, the Nokia Lumia 928 is basically an improvement on the Nokia Lumia 920 and does have its own advantages. Here, I am going to be comparing it with another handy little smart phone that hasn’t got the recognition it deserved, the Blackberry Z10. While neither of these smart phones are that great, both of them deserve to be recognized as good smart phones. Let’s get straight into it then...

    Size and weight

Both of these smart phones are pretty well matched as far as size is concerned. The Lumia 928 measures 133 x 68.9 x 10.1 mm while the Z10 measures 130 x 65.6 x 9 mm. The Lumia 928 does have a little larger display though the Z10 is more than an inch thinner. In terms of weight again the Z10 is lighter at 138 g while the Lumia 928 is much too heavy at 162 g. Nokia’s smart phones have always been on the bulkier side although the Lumia 928 is a significant improvement as far as size and weight is concerned.

But still, this point will have to go to the Z10.

    Display

Both these smart phones have pretty much the same displays in terms of size. The Lumia 928 has a 4.5” AMOLED touch screen while the Z10 has a 4.2” multi-touch screen. But how can Blackberry even consider releasing a top end smart phone without a decent touch screen? But when you compare pixel density, the Z10 is higher than the Lumia 928 at 356 ppi to 332 ppi respectively. Unfortunately you can’t really forgive Blackberry for having using such poor technology in their display.

This point has to go to Nokia.

    Memory & Storage

There is a major difference between both these smart phones as far as memory and storage is concerned. The Lumia 928 comes with 1 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage while the Z10 comes with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. The Lumia 928 has more internal storage and the Z10 has more RAM. Is it a tie? No! The tie breaker is the 64 GB of expandable storage that the Z10 offers. This is something that Nokia has started offering expandable storage on lower end Lumia smart phones (Like the Nokia Lumia 520) but it needs to seriously consider including it in their top end smart phones as well.

This point goes to Blackberry because of its expandable storage capabilities.

    Camera

The Lumia 928 comes with an 8.7 MP camera on the back while the Z10 comes with an 8 MP camera on the back. It really wouldn’t be fair to award this point to Nokia for a slightly bigger camera would it? Then again, the Lumia 928 comes with a Xenon flash as well an LED flash while the Z10 just has a LED flash. A Xenon flash significantly improves picture taking abilities in the dark and is in itself a great addition to any smart phone camera.

Considering there aren’t many smart phones that come with a Xenon flash, this point should and will go to the Lumia 928.

    OS & Performance

This is one point which doesn’t really have anything in it. Both smart phones run on Dual core, 1500 MHz, Krait processors and Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960 chips. Not state of the art technology by a long short, but none better than the other either. Both smart phones even run on the same graphics processor, Adreno 225. How can you pick a winner between two smart phones that have exactly the same technology? It’s simple, you look at their operating systems. The Lumia 928 runs on the latest Microsoft OS Windows Phone 8 while the Z10 runs on the Blackberry 10 OS. The Lumia 928 does have a much better operating system but you have to give some credit to Blackberry considering this is the first real software they have introduced for a smart phone instead of a business phone.

Still, this point goes to Nokia for its operating system.

    (Nokia Lumia 928 - Three / Blackberry Z10 - Two)

    Battery

Quite a close battle here wouldn’t you think? You couldn’t be more wrong. The Lumia 928 comes with a 2,000 mAh battery while the Z10 comes with a 1,800 mAh battery. Almost the same, so what’s the problem? The problem is that while the Lumia 928 has a standby time of 25 days the Z10 has a standby time of just 13 days. I’m guessing you now see why the Z10 can’t even come close to winning this point.

The point has to go to the Lumia 928.

    Price

Even in terms of price, both these smart phones are inseparable. Both can be purchased free of contract for $ 539.99. That is incredibly low considering most top end smart phones cost at least $ 600. But then again, Nokia has to price the Lumia 928 below the Nokia Lumia 1020 which is its flagship model as of now and the Z10 isn’t worth too much than the price tag. Maybe Blackberry was trying to capture a sizeable chunk of the market before charging too much for their smart phones.

    This one is a draw.

    Conclusion

The score reads 4 points to 2 in favor of the Nokia Lumia 928 but in reality this contest was a lot closer. Nokia managed to narrowly pick up the 2 extra points which were because of the Xenon flash and its Windows Phone 8 OS. Apart from this, both smart phones are pretty well matched and you would do well with either. Just so you know, the Blackberry Z10 has an HDMI output as well although the Nokia Lumia 928 has NFC which means you don’t really require an HDMI output. No matter which smart phone you buy, it will be worth the price you pay.
