I'm thinking of getting my first cell phone.
Looking at signing up with Cingular for 2 years.
Getting the $40 per month plan
And they will give me the Nokia 6102 free for signing up.
Or could someone recommend a better phone?

Well if you can wait a little longer, Cingular will be coming out with the Nokia 6102i. I've been told it will be the exact same price but will add Bluetooth capability. Now if you don't really need the Bluetooth then, yeah go ahead and get the 6102. It is a really good phone with nice features(Video camera, speakerphone, etc.).

You can use a wireless bluetooth headset, a bluetooth car kit, or if you know someone else with a bluetooth phone you can transfer ringtones or pictures back and forth.

How about any good non-flip phones?
    They seem more "sturdy".
I'm more into something that has good signal pick up
then all those features I probably will never use.

I have a Nokia 3220 as backup phone which is similar to the 6102 just not a flip. It has a lot of the same features and the reception is really good.

First cell phone huh? Don't let me discourage you, but a lot of first-timers who get into a contract are surprised to find there are $20-$30 in taxes on top of whatever your plan costs, and since it hasn't been mentioned yet, I thought I'd just point that out. It doesn't matter which phone company you choose to go with, they all have to collect the same taxes, but I have heard people ranting about the cost of their first bill because the taxes were more than they expected, and saw this as a good opportunity to mention it to you.

First time I've heard about the tax's, I'm really surprised that it's not talked more about in the cell phone/service reviews.

It shouldn't come as a surprise, almost half of my landline's monthly bill is taxes. Here are the taxes I paid for my Sprint PCS service in February (I have 3 lines on my account btw so you might not have to pay as much tax as I do, I dunno.)

    Taxes, Surcharges & Fees

    Government Fees & Taxes
-Jacksonville Local Communications Services Tax 6.19
-Florida State Communications Services Tax 9.77
    -Federal Tax 2.85
    -Duval County Wireless 911 1.50

    Surcharges & Fees
    -Federal Universal Service Fund 1.90
-Federal Wireless Number Pooling And Portability 0.45
    -Federal E911 1.20

    Total: $23.86

I live in California, which taxes cell phone bills at about 17.5%
But I did found out the town I live in does not impose a tax on cell phones.
So I went ahead and ordered Cingular for 2 years with the free Nokia 6102
They tried to add $21.95 for the ear plug.
If i find I have a poor signal in my area, what is the best way to drop Cingular?

Hehe, this has turned into a thread for Cingular rather than the Nokia phone . If you don't like your phone or your service, Cingular has a 30-day return policy, Details Here. Wow, I just looked it up and the Florida Communications Tax is only 9.17%, but I also pay that city tax that you don't have to worry about. The federal and 911 taxes will still apply to you, but you are probably looking at somewhere around $15 in taxes, a bit less than I originally asserted. My last bill was $144 before taxes and your plan is going to be a lot less than that. I hope you like your new service!

I'm sitting here waiting for my Nokia 6102 to be delivered today, hopefully in the next few hours.
I'm been looking at car chargers, there are some cheap generic ones on EBay
Has anyone had problems with generic car chargers?

I'm scared of cheap generic chargers! I have an i-go charger I got from radio shack, it's universally compatible with changeable tips. You can use it to power all kinds of devices, but it was $30. Once I bought a Motorola OEM charger on eBay pretty cheap, try adding OEM to your ebay search and see if you can get a Nokia brand charger for cheap.

My phone arrived, now I have to wait for 8 hours for it to charge, then two hours to activate.
Found a Nokia OEM car charger, USB cable and leather pouch for $18 including shipping, on EBay.
    Anything else I might need?
